I downloaded Windows Live Essentials 2009 and installed - but when I login it tells me there is a mandatory upgrade I must install. I go to install it, it spends ages downloading it... and then tries to install Live 2011.

Any way around this?

pretty sure if you set the compatability option to windows server windows 2000 its stop the force update as can remember doing it myself a while ago before i just updated it.

I run WLM 2009 with XP SP3 compatibility mode and it's absolutely fine (although setting it to auto-run at Windows startup doesn't work).

The only thing that's stopping me uninstalling WLM completely is the lack of clipboard support in Pidgin, you know the sharing of photos and whatnot without actually sending them in WLM.

If Pidgin was to provide that (it maybe already does in a plugin) I'd be using it permanently :P

Trillian file transfers are put onto a web server then it serves it to the recipient if that's what your looking for. ie you don't transfer them to the other persons machine directly.
