This just came up and I didn't want to hi-jack the Ivy Thread :D but its been bugging me.

With GPU NOT in an i5 2550k (which I'm not remotely interested in) is it a slightly better chip than an i5 2500k? (I know its prob going to me marginal) but hey...

No. The IGPU is still physically there, just disabled. So there is no difference between it at all apart from the 100MHz stock clock speed (which has no bearing on the overclocking potential.

I thought It may run a little cooler :(

So an extra £10 on average for a CPU with disabled functions + 100Mhz which is an easy find in the 'pot luck' of K clocking... I nearly fell for that one! Cheers! :D

Yeah I think you summed it up well.

Also gotta wonder how they bin the 2550ks? 2500k would be 3rd best bin after 2600k and 2700k, but presumably 2550k Is any sandy bridge with a failed GPU that they can persuade to run at the specified frequency no?

Ever so tempted to get a 2500K.

I want to overclock, and don't fancy spending lots on cooling for an Ivy. The only thing preventing me flexing the plastic is the thought that the 2500K might drop in price. I wonder how long the SB i5s are going to last before they are "unavailable" ?

Good point; Is there a 'past' comparison, for those of us who never watched the birth of a new intel CPU before?

Good question.

However, there are too many variables in this case. For a start, the new chips are certainly not much better than the "old" ones. The "K" SBs are still a good CPU. I'm hovering over the "buy" button. Do I hit the pillow £150 poorer, or do I sleep on it ?

I think only Intel know really, I'd suspect they are just dies where the GPU portion doesn't run to spec or is otherwise defective. Or perhaps their process is so good that they are merely disabled for product placement (unlikely given price and time in the release cycle IMO)...

£150? I havn't seen a 2500k quite that cheap delivered :p but sub £160 is out there... but for how long?

I absolutley only wanted to pay max £130 for an fx 6200. Then i dropped my AMD fan boy blinkers and switched to Intel... upping my game by £30 ish ...then I bought more RAM than I planned :D so I'm really gonna have to think long and hard, cos I think there is a risk that 2500k may rise in price on enthusiast sites as stock dies off.... when common sense says it should be dropping £15+ on the release of the next CPU and more in the next month.

Common sense says I should be sticking with my 550BE for a while longer, but I`ve got an upgrade itch to scratch, and a mate who wants to buy my current MB/CPU/RAM off me.

A 2500K @ ~ 4.5ghz with 8gb DDR3 will go nicely with my SSD. It's only and Intel 80gb X25M, but I reckon it'll go a bit faster on an Intel SATA port.

My upgrade itch has something to do with a bios bug and an F1 key everytime I switch on my Fatal1ty SLI rig :D ...and the fact that its slow!

I went ahead and got a 2600k and z77 gd65, with the 10% and £25 cashback I think it worked out pretty well for me :D

SB on it's way.

Just need a motherboard for it to live in. And some memory, of course.

Sorry AMD, but it was nice while it lasted. Maybe we'll meet again in the future.

Samsung Ram is here :D I dare not take it out of the packaging its so small I'll lose it on my desk! Mobo is dispatched... and both sites where I've been watching the i5 2500K for sub £160 delivered hasn't moved on price yet, either way!

I paid a shade over £152 delivered.

MB, RAM, FAN & CPU on their way.

stulid, on the "quick test" thread, has achieved 4.5ghz on a retail Ivy. It's early days, but that sounds promising, although it is being cooled by a Kuhler920. Might be worth waiting to see how others get on. If IB can regularly do ~ 4.3ghz on £30 air coolers, then the initial "fail" headlines might prove to be wrong (unless you were expecting IB to be a big improvement on SB, which it seems not to be).

IB or SB? The difference between them will be availibility and a few quid IMHO and in comparison to my current 939 4800+ :D either one will make a whopping leap forwards! At least the Ivy is no bulldozer :p cos that's a boat I've already sailed!

I expected Ivy to be exactly what it is and am happy with what it is minus the heat issue. Purely becuase of the heat it is a failure for my needs as it won't perform on reasonable cooling as well as an SB.
