Q) COD vs BF/ EA vs Activision

Can I ask the people who say "churn the same thing out every year".

You must be aware that the dev cycle (looking at IW/Treyarch here) for games is two years between iterations from the different studios?

Yes the engine might not change, but other things do. It's just the perception that the game gets rolled out yearly, but the way they have it now is that it rolls around annually due to different devs doing it.

Where's the evidence of innovation though from this two year dev cycle ?, its simply not there. What is released is nothing more than a mod of the last incarnation. That's not even dev specific as it stands for both EA/DICE and IW/T/ACTI

So the ability to lay prone/bendy bullets is the new technology and gameplay expansion that was required to keep everyone happy that they are not just churning out the same old things every game?

nearly 3 times as many people online now playing cod2 on pc
nearly 4 times as many people playing cod4 on pc

bf3 best game since...... :D currently 29,000 online :)

Bottom line. (These are not necessarily my own opinions).

People feel betrayed by the COD series after COD 4 and blame Activision for it's demise.

BF2 was the pinnacle and had/has a HUGE fanbase on the PC, as such, people thought E.A> Activision.

The point is now mute as E.A pretty much did the exact thing with the BF franchise what Activision did with the COD franchise.

E.A are far from getting an easy ride now after all the ******** and lies they proclaimed about the PC SKU of BF3.

People were cutting E.A some slack a while ago as they seemed to be turning a corner, turns out it was the quiet before the storm as Origin was then released upon us and the marketing **** that came with it along with BF3 which despite its current successes, still has a large number of players saying it stinks.

Played COD MW/MW2/MW3- It was great fun for me, especially MW2 (played about 2 years!)
However switched to BF3 about 2 months ago and really enjoy it! Forgot when last time played COD, however probably got bored after years playing, BF3 is something new for me!

Downside is battlelog- sometimes have to restart couple time stop connect to the server, in-game when map is changing sometimes get blackscreen and have to restart game!

To me it's this:

CoD was amazing up until Modern Warfare came out. I just found that from that point on it was all about spray and pray and kill streaks. It used to be a game that required skill & now it requires none. On top of that you have map packs released every year but sold as new games ripping off their entire customer base. What really did it for me was the first time they took away server browsers, that in my eyes was a stab in the back to the PC market who made the CoD series popular in the first place. I know they have tried to rectify that, but it doesn't mean they didn't do it.

I see Battlefield differently. BF2 was the first one I played, then there was BF Vietnam and BFBC2 before BF3. I find them totally different. I don't see them as just map packs because the whole game changes. For example, BF2 was not replaced with BC2, BC2 was all about smaller maps etc and seemed to be aimed more towards CoD players. It was like a dumbed down version of BF2 with better graphics. Then BF3 comes along, it can't be classed as a map pack to BF2 because of the huge overhaul, there is so much more to it (although I wish they'd kept the commander). It is also completely different from BC2 because it s fully fledged with large maps and lots of vehicles.

I guess it boils down to the fact that when playing CoD it really shows that it has been designed solely for consoles, then just chucked across like giving us PC gamers a bone. BF3 even though it was designed for consoles I can't personally tell. It seems the PC community has been thought of and is valued (not as much as we would like but at least more the with CoD).

COD has become to Activision like Fifa has become to EA. That's the main issue.

I still want to buy the COD games, but only for the single player story stuff, and i'm not going to pay the utterly ridiculous prices they are keeping artificially inflated.

EA is still a crappy company. They make a lot of money, but screw a lot of people over in the process, and critically.. not properly supporting their product. Lack of proper support has pee'd gamers off for a long long time about EA.

Unfortunately, this attitude has made them rich. So they keep doing it.

And to quote the person that said people are mindless? Nice. Perhaps those people just enjoy playing the games, and are happy with the graphics.. not everyone is an enthuthiast like we are here.

Sorry, can i just ask...

Since when was BF3 designed for consoles? I distinctly remember reading when BF was in devolpment that one of their selling points was that it was designed for PC and ported to console rather than the other way around??

Anyway for me totally different games that only get compared because of the 'war' between developers..

I had em all and from 1942 and COD 1, the last COD i bought was BLOPS and i felt ripped off.. Looking forward to BF4 tho!

COD is just a basic run and gun, akin to serious sam etc. BF has a bit more scope and is a lot more in-depth (mavity & bullet drop for example)..... So choose your sytle of gameplay = choose the game!

I haven't play either mw3 or bf3 yet.
But mw2 v BF BC2.
It was simple with me I love the story aspect of mw2 but hated multiplayer.
BF BC2 vice versa.

basically to cut along story short they told pc crowd that it was lead platform becuase of pre orders ;) so pc crowd would spread word and cod hate is strong so then the whole pc nerd rage sets in yeahhh no console bs for us we are pc elite :D

then after peak of pre orders are done dice decide to release article saying that there focus had changed and console was priority :p so funny. reason the priority was changed ias the ps3 basically is the biggest seller of bf3

bf3 is a console game but it is fun some times on pc.

Activision strategy is yearly release, with added micro-transactions and payable content.

You can't do much in a year of development except incremental updates on what you have.

COD is a cash cow, plain and simple. It's not the developer's fault per-se, but the relentless corporate business plan. COD will get dropped when it runs dry.

No idea about EA's plans, but they seem to be heading in the same direction.

You hardly make any sense. The reason they changed their focus on development was sales on the Ps3?

It seem their focus did change, I still enjoy BF3 and see it as a different game to COD. I do enjoy them both in small amounts.

Since when was BF3 designed for consoles?

Since day 1.

Anyone who believes otherwise is silly.

I refused to purchase the game for many reasons and am pleased I kept the money in my pocket.

Neither COD or BF will get my FPS pennies for the foreseeable future.

This year for example, I am looking forward to this:

consoles generate more sales so the game was more console orientated . its that simple. the only difference is cod we knew this but bf clowns tried to string the pc crowd along until it was noticed then they actually admitted it.

now they have the ground plans down bf series will just mirror cod and become pure console intead of going console. they are both as guilty as each other but both games can be fun

I know this as games are always made for you're best selling platform, we do this at our studio. I was pointing out the the sentence that makes no sense and the rest of the unreferenced opinionated babble.

I think graphics play a major part in distinguishing the difference between CoD and BF. For example, compare BF2 (DX9), Bad Company 2 (DX9 I think) and BF3 (DX10/11). There is a clear, very clear difference in the quality of visuals. Underneath though, yeah the games are very similar.

Now compare MW1, MW2 and Black Ops. Probably going to stir up a hornets nest now but I dont see much, if any ,difference. And again, underneath the graphics, yeah the games are very similar.

I think visual perception plays a huge part.

Personally for me the difference is in stuff like dedicated servers and generally feeling like DICE are still a PC developer and Infinity Ward are not.

There's other stuff with the gameplay but for me personally that is the difference in my goodwill levels towards the respective companies.
