So my Dad turns 60 this year and wants a party. He's decided to have it at our house.

I have one olympic ticket to the mens football quarter final, and if the games/groups work out like they should, it'll be team GB i'll be going to see.

Dads party is on the same day. His birthday is the 1st of August, the game is the 4th which is when he wants his party.

I asked my Dad to move his party by a week, but he's refused, said he's told people already when its going to be, and wants it as close to his birthday. I pointed out that in that case I won't be able to come. I can't move the olympics, he can move his party. The fact he won't so his daughter can be there speaks volumes to me.

What do people think I should do? If a passing mod could set me up a poll that would be good.
Options are

go to the party, go to the olympics, Dad should move the party

IMO your dad is being selfish and should move the party. If it was me I would go to the game.

Its in August, he has loads of time to tell people the new date.

You're making a mountain out of a molehill. Neither thing is important enough to stop you doing the other (or to make your father change the plan). Just do what you want.

You don't know my family, i'm fairly certain i'm going to have months of guilt trips.

It's so easy to move the date of a party though, I can't see why that is such a problem. Often people will have their birthday party on another date as their birthday falls on a work day.

The date he has chosen is a Saturday night. No matter what Saturday he chooses it will clash with something...

Stop playing the victim, it's his 60th and he wants to have a party near to his birthday, sounds pretty bloody reasonable to me.

He is not being selfish, you are being selfish, you are expecting him to completely rearrange his party so you (one person) can do something you want to do, alone.

Er, i'm not asking to go fishing or for a walk, its the olympics and its the one and only ticket I managed to get.

Go watch the Special Olympics, I mean Football.

I'm assuming you've had the tickets booked for a while and your dad's known about it too?

I think it's just one of those things, it's a stalemate so you should go and your dad should have the party without you.

Selfish brat. Go to the party and quit moaning - just think of everything your parents did for you when bringing you up.

I got the tickets ages back yes, and it was only today when the fixtures were released that the clash has been pointed out to me. My Dad has been planning his party for a couple of weeks now.

Could try trading your ticket with someone else for another match unless it is that one you want to see specifically?

I think you are both being stubborn to be honest.
