Hi,

I wonder whether anyone could explain this to me. At almost £300 I am really struggling to understand what is so special about the D5 Solar. Does anyone know why this particular pump is so expensive?

Cheers,
Andy.

taken from another site with a little bit of google fu :)

The Laing D5 with a different approach:

Besides the standard elements of the Laing D5 Which are have been known for years this "solar" version has additional features: Besides the extremely long life span and the low noise emissions thanks to a unique bearing design this version therefore has to extremely low starting voltage as it was designed for operation with solar panels. The low starting voltage Allows the user to run the pump at very low speeds whilst still plenty of Maintaining flow. The pump has a current draw of 0.25A-1.45A (Important: Check compatibility of the sockets), Allowing both absolutely silent operation and powerful use of the same pump when controlling the pump's speed via a fan controller.

This pump is perfect to give you the choice from two extremes and anything in between!

Ah, so essentially better low speed pumping. Quieter and lower power consumption when high flow isn't required.

I was under the impression the standard D5 Vario had these same characteristics though.

Andy.

its not really a pump for pc its a water circulation pump for housing

ofc it could be used but why ?

this is clearly a very specialized pump - and not specialized for computers - i;d get the normal/vario D5 :)

I'm a little confused I guess as they are advertised for water cooled PC application.

Why not specialised for computers?

it can be used in pc applications of course as its small enough but from what i read after a little google its more fro pumping water around small housing projects

The first DC spherical motor pump for direct connection to photovoltaic panels with automatic performance optimization using MPPT technology (Maximum Power Point Tracking)

Application
The Ecocirc solar pump can be used wherever a highly efficient circulation pump is needed without a direct connection to AC power. It can be connected directly to a photovoltaic panel and is characterized by its small size, high efficiency, very low power consumption and its MPP tracking. The shaftless spherical motor technology enables a long, maintenance free and quiet service life. Areas of application are thermal solar systems for single family homes.

oh wow, i didnt know they were sold for use in computers, from the talk about solar panels i guessed they were for domestic/eco use

(and id remove that link ;) )

This is how I read the intended original use of this pump too. Although going back ten years or so when I built my first water cooled setup the pumps were intended for aquariums. :-) It just so happened that the spec met the requirements for PC application too.

yer that and small irrigation projects and the like a lot of the pc pumps originate or are the same as those . tbh it doesnt even look good all in brass and for that price dont think its something i will be saving for .
