Charles Taylor, the former Liberian leader is on trial for war crimes. He has been found guilty, I am not sure of what charges but that is what is breaking on Sky News.

Sky News have also reported that as per a prior agreement, he will serve any sentence in the UK.

Why are we taking him in?

If Taylor is convicted, Britain has offered to hold him in a high security prison. No jail in West Africa is considered secure enough to keep him behind bars.

Or because we are seen as a soft touch on the international stage?
Or because we were a bit too involved in some dodgy diamond dealings and want it all kept inhouse.

To be honest offering to provide the secure incarceration of a notorious war criminal is something I'm quite happy our country is doing. When there is an international tribunal various countries provide components of the process, in one trial we may be proving a judge, another the defence lawyer. This time we are fulfilling the sentence.
