Hotmail server hacked

Thanks for the heads up - I'll keep an eye out for any further articles in the coming days.

Be fair to the chap - he's only posted 19 times in two years and he's posted something which he thought could help some people :)

Chances of Hotmail servers being hacked - Slim to none.

Sorry but your wrong as my hotmail account hacked a year or so ago and it was not my fault since I rarely used the account and didn't use it to register with any site that could be faked.

thought id post this as a heads up,my hotmail was hacked.
microsoft hotmail severs were exploited a few days ago
accounts are blocked and when you try to
change your password the exploit kicks in. accounts
linked to paypal and banking sites maybe hit.
this exploit works with most browsers but not iexplorer (what ive heard)
so anyone with hotmail problems beware, cheers

You missed out ...

"This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon. AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the anti virus software's are not capable of destroying it." :D

It's FUD. He has been corrected.

Easy to guess security question then.

Your Hotmail account was not hacked.

Then how do you explain all those sent messages that I know I didn't send (all of which contain malicious links)

couple of days ago tried to log into my hotmail account, message from hotmail said account blocked due to sending high number of spam..

The spammers had already got into your account at that stage! That's why your account got blocked - they got in using your secret question or a keylogger and sent a load of junk.

option said try resetting password which i tried to do.thats where the xss attack happened.you send a request to homail server but because they are exploited they gain access to your email account

That wasn't an XSS exploit. That was the legit message you get when spammers get into your account and send a load of rubbish. The damage was already done.

That's just one bloke on a random forum. Don't believe what you read without corroborating it first!

Your Hotmail account was not hacked.

Using your secret question/keylogging you/a virus on your system is not hacking.

Are you trying to bait me into a flame war.

My account was hacked as I had no viruses or key loggers on my computer, and I hardly used the account so any local compromise is out of the question (and if they'd gotten the answer to my secret question my password would've been changed which it hadn't).

End of discussion

... to your knowledge!

There's another option anyway. If you used the same password for another website, they could have got your password from that site (either by guessing a question or through a database compromise) and used it to get into your email. It's much more likely that another random website was hacked than that Hotmail was hacked.

Is there a more reliable source for that, i.e. a security website with a decent reputation?
