i7 3820 / X79-UD3 / 16GB or i7 3770K / Extreme6 / 16GB

Personally I got a 3820 about a month ago even though I knew that Ivy was close, my intention was always to upgrade to a Ivy-E at a later date.

Can't imagine needing 32GB for the life of this system.

Hell, I already think 16GB is overkill.

Can't wait to get my Asus board in. Hope it's a goodun :D

Nice 1. Pics soon then? :)

As soon as i receive, my project is on hold - see here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18391630

Will upload pics there :D

TBH 8GB is overkill for me, just ram is so cheap right now, couldnt help myself :p. 32GB cost me £146 delivered, 8GB of this stuff is http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-117-KS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=817 is £130 so i say bargain!

Was very tempted to go 3930K, but thought I would see how things pan out.

Should Ivy-E not materialise, or turns out rubbish, then will get 3930K...

Though it would have been nice to get one now. Am jealous :)

Nice!

Should have taken some pics of mine :D

This Formula board is frikkin insane! Out of curiosity I clicked the option for extreme OC - well let's just say I wouldn't ever run things at the settings it put, but it certainly showed me that my CPU is capable of 5GHz :D

Makes me just a little sad I didn't get a 3930K now... this board deserves better than a 3820 :D

For now though, I have gone with a modest 4.5Ghz

Let us know how you get on with yours :)

I've got a UD3 and it's fine, it doesn't deal well with BCLK overclocking so it's a bit of a no no for 3820, but my 3930k runs absolutely lovely on it

in fact my 3930k + UD3 came to about the same as a higher priced board that would allow good OC on a 3820, but obviously then I've got the benefit of the 3930k instead of a couple of features on a motherboard that I'll probably never use anyway

Guess some are better than others.

But seriously the thing would get a corrupted bios at the drop of a hat - not even talking insane OC's here. It was good at recovering from the backup bios, but figured I'd rather not hang on to it.

Regarding price, my 3820 and Rampage Formula board cost the same as jsut a 3930K would have cost, so can't complain too much :)

seems odd logic - an ASUS P9X79 Pro would clock well the 3820 would it not for only 40 quid more than a UD3 ?

I'm considering a 3930k - so was attempting to follow your logic of a 3930k + UD3 being about the same price as a board like the Asus that would clock the 3820 well ??

I went for 3930k and Asus Sabertooth X79, installed today and loving it :D

Finally managed to get 5GHz stable with all cores + HT, on an XSPC Rasa RS360 kit + an extra 120mm rad. Idle temps around 35c, load 65ish, <3 this mobo/cpu combo!

Decided to hell with playing it safe. Don't plan on keeping this cpu forever, so aiming for 5GHz.

Would be nice if I could use the voltage-drop at idle, but that's just not possible when upping bclk on 3820.

Have dropped my memory speeds for now purely to find out how to get cpu at 5GHz.

Currently 4.75 seems good at 1.38V.

Though I think I will try the Zalman Flex tonight. While my initial seating of the kuhler 620 wasn't good, I reseated last night, but at 4.75 I have seen peak temps of 78.

Don't care if I see temps at 80 at 5GHz in IBT, as nothing I ever normally do would stress CPU that hard.

Hopefully won't be tto hard getting her to 5GHz, as would actually like to play some games this weekend :D

Hmmm, actually in the interest of my own sanity, I think I am going to leave everything at stock for now, or I won't get any sleep this weekend.

I become somewhat obsessed doing these things and I don't sleep - up at 5 yesterday and today.

I WILL aim for 5GHz down the line, even if I might not get all the way there, but for this weekend, I just want to relax :)

Mine was fine with the 3820 and I found it easy to overclock. I didnt move the BCLK though just the strap (or whatever its called) that effectively bumps it up to 125. I then increased the multiplier till I capped at 4.5 ghz. For me I am happy as I got the overclock I wanted and the board was much cheaper than the other options out there. Maybe its not as easy as the others but I found it much easier than overclocking my Q6600 which needed lots of adjustments to the bios.
