and all the 670 is, is a detuned cheaper less good 680, this doesn't interest me one bit, a price drop is interesting yes but only for AMD !!!!!

I know this because this 1 out of 100 reviews I'm looking at says the 7970 is faster.

This same for the Saphire 7950? Currently got side fan pulling air in through the case and out the back (was original set to exhaust heat but changed it around)
The Sapphire blows the air onto the card as well...

how loud is the 'normal' coil whine for a 7970 ?
I only notice a little when on a loading screen and the FPS shoots up to the thousands, barely audible at all.
Doesn't sound normal to me.

If you can hear it with the side of the pc on over fans, drives etc running then I would say it's too loud and would need an RMA. Some whine is not unusual for high performance components.
It's a well known fact that we care what our computers look like.
Otherwise cable management would not exist, nor would braided fancy cable extensions and pretty coloured parts.
Stock cards do tend to look rather boring

I've noticed a little whine but it's not very loud. It's a really high pitch squeal I hear but only noticable in a very quiet room. Don't know if this is normal or not but my last cards (6950,4890) didn't make that noise.
