Just after a bit of brief information - OH has texted me to say her sister got clamped and had to pay £250 to get her car released.

Was under the impression the clamping cost was a lot less.

No idea where it was or what company - I'll find out in a few hours.

Surely £250 for a clamping is a bit excessive?

When do the laws come in about cowboy clamper's not being allowed to clamp everyone?

I'll admit I know 0 about it.

Isn't this why petrol angle grinders were invented?

And then afterwards you can simply take the keys for the clamp from their cold, lifeless, decapitated corpse (after spitting on it of course), unlock it, and be on your merry way.

Just mind you don't cut any clothes or jewellery else it'll be criminal damage :p

People keep asking, but there never seems to be a definitive answer. What's stopping you from using some bolt cutters on the padlock, then leaving the clamp at the side of the road with a new padlock and keys left with it?

Criminal damage technically, but in my opinion they deserve it so if you have a petrol disc cutter then shove it to them....

Its only criminal damage if you damage the clamp, just remove the wheel and the parts of the car which the clamp is attached to. Once the clamp falls off by itself reassemble the car and drive away (make sure you leave the clamp behind or else it's theft!)

beat me to it

When I got a clamp I paid my mate £20 to jack the car up, pop the suspension strut and it just dropped off.

I then took it to the police station and handed it in, the nice lady even gave me a receipt.

For some reason the clamper wasn't best please when I called him. He should have been pleased; I live next to a river, if I find another one I'll take it for a swim.

It annoyed me a bit that the copper thought it was illegal to drive off without paying the 'fine'. Surely he should know that it's not a fine, only an invoice and he can drive off whenever he pleases.

This

Years ago in Slough, a guy in an Escort got clamped and he went absolutely ballistic, reversed his car out of the space with the clamp on and proceeded to completely wreck his front wing as the clamp cut/deformed chunks off the wing as it went round. Didn't hang around to find out if he managed to get rid of the clamp but when I left is front drivers side wing was an ex-wing.
