Tourists Banned From Dutch Cannabis Cafes

Surely refusing to sell because someone is from another nationality as a tourist is discriminatory? Will they refuse to sell to other dutch tourists such as people from other parts of Holland?

One thing that's stopped me going to Amsterdam is the drugs situation.

I don't get people in this world. I've never seen someone on Weed get into a fight cos a guy looked at him wrong. I have multiple times though when they're on alcohol.
I'm 100% against recreational drugs but I know it doesn't affect me unless I let it.

Yeah, but stuff can be justifiable. As a general rule, states can do stuff if it's to do with public policy, public security, or public morality, for example. It's not as though the law is completely strict, stuff can be justified.

Accordingly, this rule constitutes a “covert form of discrimination” that is prohibited by Art. 56 TFEU.[20] However, it is possible to justify the rule in question with legitimate interests, as long as they observe the principle of proportionality.
Ye, just read ^^ that bit.. What a BS loop hole.

I bet it'll be the same sort of loophole they'll use to justify internet watching too "legitimate interests".

Not really. It has to be proportional. Eg. you might be able to argue that to stop radical Islamic terrorists it's a good idea to monitor those kinda websites, or the internet at radical Mosques, or something. But it'd be hard to argue that they need to monitor every computer in the UK.

What is proportional though? What is the definition of a legitimate interest?

A threat to public safety, terrorist stuff fair enough. It has to come to a point though where it starts creeping into our domain and encroaching on our interests. Where is this line drawn?

Total grey area that's been exploited.

You think it's been exploited, in this instance? I don't really see a problem with stopping drug tourism - it'll stop people taking it out of Holland, into surrounding countries (which don't have the same relaxed drug laws), it'll stop ***** going over and just being a nuisance from drugs, etc.

TBH, I don't really have a problem with them banning it.

Nah I agree, the ban doesn't affect me directly either.

It's obviously encroaching on some peoples interests though, how long before it does on mine with something else?

It's the principal of it I'm bewildered with I suppose, the idea of using someones nationality as the measure to wether they can buy something or not. What stops dutch nationals trafficing drugs anyway?

The idea of justified discrimination for any reason is just mind boggling to me.

Now the real tourists can come and enjoy themselves.

My parents went a few years ago with a couple of friends and had a blast. I'm fairly certain they didn't go for the pot and hookers. They went and did "real tourist"y stuff.

I find it a bit silly if people are being put off going to the place because of a funny wiff here and there. As has been said, there's far more to Amsterdam than drugs, and it's not like the stoners are going round bottling people or stabbing them in alleys...

I've been going to Amsterdam for years and I think they have already done a good job of cleaning up the place. If you go back just four years you couldn't move in the tourist zone without being offered drugs of some type. Since then the red light district has been reduced, coffee shops have lost the ability to sell alcohol, many of the places selling weed for the sake of it have disappeared. The only trouble you see over there is usually tourists that have had too much to drink.

Got to laugh at people who will now visit because there won't be any more stoned tourists. You do release that pretty much every major city in the world has drug problems, most of which are a lot worse than weed right? In fact Britain has a much bigger problem than the NL.

Well to be honest I don't frequent places where excessive consumption of alcohol happens either.

Yes, and I avoid those too.

Always surprises me how people who have never been to Amsterdam assume its some kind of sordid drug haven with dealers in every corner and addicts sleeping in every alley. I've been 3 times, I absolutely love the place, as does my wife - I've been a coffee shop once (because it had a pool table) and never smoked.

Just learn to speak Dutch like Steve Maclaren ;)

Doesn't bother me in the slightest I don't smoke. It might help tourism by removing the incorrect mindset that Amsterdam is nothing but dope and whores.
