it is possible to run 2 x 2.1 speakers systems on one pc but have the work a as proper system i.e 2 front and 2 rear with 2 subs? or would i just have to get a jack splitter and run them from the same out put

i ask because i had limited desk space so i got a 2.1 system about 1 month ago, but i just ordered a new desk and would like to use the extra space for better sound quality.

sound card = X-fi xtreme music gold edition
2.1 system = http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-044-SL&groupid=702&catid=22&subcat=1920

More speakers dont equal better sound quality. You would be better off getting some more expensive speakers. Sell yours and upgrade

when i say better sound quality i mean having front and rear not just front, i chose the wrong words

You mean 4.1?

Yes that is possible in certain times, 4.1 may make games and films sound better, but I prefer 2.0 or 2.1 for music myself.

You'd be better off buying 2.0 speakers for the rears. In 2.1 and 4.1 mode, the sound card sends the bass frequencies via the main green socket, along with the frequencies for the fronts. The crossover in the subwoofer unit, then sorts out what is sent to the subwoofer, and what is sent to the front speakers.

If you got 2.1 speakers for the rears, then that subwoofer would not be doing much, as the bass is only be sent to the main subwoofer. Also, the rear speakers are not as important as the fronts. Better to just buy 2.0 speakers.

You would be wasting your money on buying a second 2.1 set.

Assuming you want surround sound then sell you existing set and get a 5.1 that will be guaranteed to work, and be balanced.

Just look at the 5.1 sets on OcUK :-) Some nice reasonably priced sets.

Also.. you say 'extra desk space' then talk about surround sound. Exactly where are you intending to put the rear speakers? Your sound positioning and general quality will be awful if you don't actually position them behind you. So, if you don't intend on putting them behind you, then sell the existing kit, and buy either a better 2.1 set or a decent 2.0 set.

Very true. There is no point in getting 5.1 speakers, or adding rears for 4.1, unless you place them behind you.
