Which power supply should I get and advice on new Ivy Bridge upgrade

Heyo folks!

I was a silly billy when I bought my last upgrade and bought the "Antec CP 850W Modular Power Supply" - stupid of me as I have a Corsair Obsidian 650D case. As such the PSU is sitting inside the case but it's basically covering two of the GPU slots and is not good for airflow. I am a *** - I know this! (If you want to buy it off me throw me a PM!).

Now I'm looking for something else. I think 850W is probably way overkill as well as I don't intend to buy a second GPU and the new Ivy Bridge CPUs of which I'll be upgrading to seem to have a lower economic footprint.

Anyway I have the "Asus P8Z68-V GEN3 Intel Z68" case, a "Gainward GeForce GTX 570" and I'll be upgrading to a Intel Core i7-3770 3.40GHz.

Can somebody spec me a good PSU that's going to work well with this setup?
Also the CPU may be overkill - do you think it's worth the extra 50 or so quid just for the hyperthreading of the i7?

Thanks very much!

What CPU do you currently have? What do you use the PC for?

Hello sir!

I currently have Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz and use it mainly for doing nothing. A few open SSH shells, sometimes play SC2 and League of Legends and I'll often stream with Xsplit (I no longer do casting which really would have benefited from the i7 upgrade).

Okay so between the Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 600W and the XFX Pro 650W Core Edition what do you reckon? One has a tener off and is modular, the other has a little more juice (I'll likely be overclocking).

Also on another note (sorry to bother you!) if I were to get a specialized CPU cooler what should I go for? And I'd obviously want good thermal paste, is there a new way of spreading it on Ivy Bridge?

Thank you very much!

Why do you want to move to an i7 3770?

Seems like a waste unless you are planning on becoming a master video editor or something?

You think I'd notice basically no difference?

As far as I'm aware it ran at a lower power and has an on-board DRNG that could be fun to play with on Linux!

Personally I would go with the XFX, I have nothing against the coolermaster range.

The Gelid below is a excellent cooler and come with thermal compound.

Okay well I may *not* go for the Ivy just yet then - but get a better cooler, overclock nicely and use a fitting PSU for my computer.

I like the new architecture though!

The IB is nice, But the overclocking headroom seems to be lower than SB as the IB chips get hot hot hot!

Right thanks guys, I'm going for the XFX and the Gelid. Overclock my current i5-2500k and wait for the next range of CPUs to come out.

Help very much appreciated!
