I was just wondering why so many peeps buy a £400+ gfx card with only 2 years, surely its wise to get a 3 year+ warranty..

most people will sell before the 2 years.

Why buy a £600 iPhone with only 1 year? :)

I'd never buy an iphone instead I have the SG S2 which (will) cost me £600 over 2 years. Phones I think are easily repaired and i've not had a single issue with mine in a year.

I see, yeh i'm looking long term and value, i guess a proper enthusiast is one that has the best stuff each and every year.

So how much less are you willing to sell your £450 card in a years time?

For me it would take something special in a years time and at a cheap price tbh. After reasoning with myself, I can see me hanging onto this 680 for quite along while TBH and if needed maybe add another.

same could be said with gfx cards.

£300ish

I dont think gfx cards are easy to repair at all. I know on a phone the battery, screen, motherboard etc can all be changed and replacements found easily. Not so for gfx cards.

So you wouldnt mind losing £150 in a year, sure you've used it for a year but its still quite a loss.

But i like the idea of selling in around 2 years time, when, either you buy a second one or sell and buy a newer card.

ok, they may not be easy to reapir, but they're harder to damage compared to a phone with you carry with you every day

But if the gfx card goes after 2 years you lose it all, phone can be repaired.

Also you may want to actually reply rather than editing the quote...;)

If it is going to die, chances are it will be within the first year of ownership. If it is still going after 2 years what reason would cause it to die afterwards unless you were messing around with it constantly?

I've never had a GPU all out die, some get aged DVI ports that like to mess up a little but never had a fatal hardware fault.

my quote reply technique is win :D
Because then no one can actually quote you...

Most dead graphics cards can be repaired by baking them...

Hmm this may have changed my mind about choosing a gfx card with min 3 year warranty, just sell after a few lose a few £££ but get the newest ****.

I may now cancel the GB Windforce 7970 for a better package, the WF comes with no adapters and stuff...

Same for me. I still have an 8800GT going strong in my Wifes computer. It is on for a minimum of 8 hours a day and more if she forgets to switch it off (most times grrrrr)

This card I am guessing is 4-5 years old now.

With ANY computer component it will cost you and not be worth the re-sale value generally. This is the norm and accepted amongst us geeks. If you don't like it, buy a console every 7+ years :p

Bit OT but i think consoles generally will end up costing you more than an initial spend on a pc, mainly due to how cheap pc games get and how quickly.

edit- Of-course you can always get all PC games for free, so even better :p

A good way of looking at it...Never really thought of games prices (even though I have a PS3 and XBOX360)
