Started a new thread as didn't want to hijack any one else's.

I have a Xonar DG and for the last year having been using HS1As. The kids broke the mic on it earlier so looking for a replacement.

Having looked around I have probably decided to go down the route of separate headphones and a clip on mic. There seem to be a lot of options though and my budget is around £150-£200 and may consider 2nd hand.

So far I have looked at the Sennheiser 595, Audio Technica ATH-AD700, Beyerdynamic DT770 (which ohm version?) or for an all in one solution the Sennheiser PC350/360.

I mainly would use them for gaming such as BF3 so positional audio with the Xonar DG Dolby Headphone would be a plus but I do like to listen to a fair bit of music too. I won't be using them for film/video as I run all of that through my HTPC.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Any particular ones recommended?

I have Bose AE2 which i brought for music / video, but dynamics sound great when aming (BF3). Have just ordered cheap gaming headset (Plantronics 780), really should have got separate mic - but have past experience of getting analogue mic to work in games).

Probably can't go too far wrong with any of the first few headphones you asked about but you might want to look into which ones are open/closed and whether they sit on your ear or around your ear etc.

Cheers for the help guys, looking at a sale on the MM for the Audio Technica ATH-AD700 + Xonar STX so may upgrade the sound card at the same time. This seems like a good combo?

AD700's while being fantastic for positional sound when gaming, do lack bass, and are not the best choice for music, unless you listen to only classical music.

denon d2000 just bought for £200 from high street retailer, reduced from £300.

Ok, may have a look at these.

Actually I do listen to mainly classical and vocal music (old before my time!)

In that case, the AD700's would be a great choice. As they do lack bass, explosions will lack any kind of weight to them, so do bare that in mind. Some people while looking for positional sound, also want explosions to feel like explosions. Apparently, the AD700's are popular amongst more serious FPS gamers, as they are more concerned about positional locations of opponents, than how good that bomb that just went off sounded.

D2000's on the other hand, are completely the opposite. Bass aplenty. Pretty good for positional sound, AFAIK. Probably not the headphone choice for classical music though. Probably more suited to dance and hip hop.

I use to have a pair of Sennheiser PC350's, I then moved onto the Sennheiser PC360's (Im on my second pair now) and I love them. After my PC350's I tried a few different pair of headsets, tried some Turtle Beaches and Astro A40's and non felt quite as good as the Sennheisers for comfort and sound. I use mine for quite long periods of gaming and music (easily 6-12 hours a day) and I cant fault them. Have them hooked up to a Asus Xonar Essence STX and sound is really good and people always complement me on how clear the mic is.
