driving without tax disc displayed

Seriously, 19 replies? How have we managed to get 19 replies in a thread for which there is one simple answer?

If you use the electronic vehicle licensing service or tax by post at the end of the month, there’s now an exemption for not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month to allow time for the new disc to arrive in the post. While you are still waiting for your tax disc you will need to display your current tax disc. The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires.

Quite why we need all th guesswork I've no idea :p

Mine wasn't guesswork (although I couldn;t remember whether it was 5 or 7 days) and I posted reply no 7 :p

Few weeks ago I came back to my car after not driving it for a few days to find the (rubbish) magnetic tax disc back holder had fallen off! Fortunately the tax disk somehow managed to statically hold on. Cool story.

Displaying a photocopied tax disk is an offence.

Anyway back to OP. You will be fine. Print out the confirmation from the web and keep it in the car to show if you get pulled up and try to avoid parking on streets that have traffic wardens as they will report you and you may get clamped or towed but cant see that happeing if its a couple of days out.

Most motorbike owners display copies as they're vulnerable to being nicked. I know my Dad does and he's never had a problem.

My mum forgets all the time! its been months out of date and MOT before :p
I was even driving the car ( insured of course! ) and it was out of MOT by 3-4 weeks :o

So in my experience, you'll be fine :D

I too equate all crimes as being morally wrong as each other for I too am an idiot who thinks simply something being illegal makes it wrong

Don't really care for the morals of it, if someone has asked the question it's only fair that they should be given the legally correct response. I don't think it would be very nice if someone was actually done for failing to display off the back of incorrect advice from the forum.

You're absolutely right, a biker displaying a photocopy and keep the real disc on his person to avoid people nicking his tax is absolutely the same as murder.

I was waiting for someone dim enough to come along and actually believe I think not displaying a tax disc is as bad as murder.

Not displaying a tax disc is not a biggie. Print the receipt out and put on dashboard.

Not paying your tax is worst then murder as you are depriving the government of the ability to waste your money.

My mate got pulled over for not having a valid disc on show. Turns out he had his old tax discs in the holder on the windscreen and his 5 year old lad had been shuffling them about so an old one was at the front. Oops!

A few years ago I managed to order a new tax disc and accidently left it on the dashboard instead of the holder. I completely forgot about it until about 6 months later when I noticed my tax disc being displayed had expired months ago. Driving around with the windows open meant the 'new replacement' had long been lost.

I contacted the DVLA and they sent me a replacement for a nominal fee. 6 months with an expired disc and no-one could care less. I guess on their computers I was coming up as insured and taxed :)

how did they see that from behind ?

surely he was pulled over for something else and they didnt like him so looked for anything they could 'do' him for

Police cars driving towards you, spying for out of date tax, are capable of performing a turn in the road

Ok, so substitute the words "pulled over" for whatever words you'd use to say he was stopped because the policeman noticed the disc was the wrong colour as my mate drove past him, wherever he was.

This may blow your mind, but the angle from which the policeman saw the out of date disc was not supposed to be the interesting/amusing part of the story.
