Gentlemen,

Planning a stag weekend to your fine City. Its not going to be a stereotypical 48hrs of booze, strippers and humiliation. We've got guys coming from Canada, (possibly) Argentina and one on leave from Afghanistan so looking for somewhere we can have a proper catch up. A large cottage or barn conversion would be ideal with a couple of proper pubs close by, access to a TV for xbox etc.

Googling has pulled up a few in the Somerset area but nothing close enough to the city centre. Any villages close by I should be looking at?

Also going to book a "lads" activity like offroad karting, paintball, clays etc. Any recommendations there? Lots of websites offering stag activities but would prefer somewhere recommended by locals.

Thanks guys

If you have access to cars, there's a couple of Skirmish paintball places about 15 minutes away. I haven't been to those, but I've been to a different Skirmish place (in Surrey) and it was pretty good. Seems decent prices (and they price match), and you can probably get a good deal with it being a stag do.

Firstly, I went to Skirmish Bristol (www.skirmishbristol.co.uk) for my birthday before last and it was great. I've been paintballing a fair amount compared to most people (about 10 times) and I was dubious about going there due to it being a chain. There was 20 of us so we had an exclusive team but it was really really good and would thoroughly recommend it. Some nice areas and games etc too.

Bristol is actually very well linked in terms of countryside if that's what you want. How far away driving do you want to stay? The closest area of "countryside" to the centre is Long Ashton/Leigh Woods and surrounding areas, west of the city, both of which are just the other side of the Clifton suspension bridge (so 5 minute drive to 10+ pubs in Clifton, and a 10 minute drive to the centre).

Go play paintball at the new skirmish site near Cribbs Causeway. Ask for a bloke called Jock, sound guy and runs a good site.

So looks like Skirmish is top choice for paintball :) Any recommendations for "motorsports"?

@Russinating - that's the kind of thing I was thinking of. Need room for about 10.

@PistolPete - the Cori Tap looks great, especially if we get a night with live music.

As above, expect to be the oldest people in the Corrie Tap and the only people with jobs too. It pulls a big student crowd and you'll have never smelt ammonia like it before until you visit the wc there.

I live 100m from the place and I've only been there a handful of times, all for a swift half before moving on. There's plenty better and less skanky places in the area.

As for motorsports, I've been here - www.team-sport.co.uk/bristol - and it was ok. There's a few Go Karting places in Bristol and I think they're all pretty good and you're probably best off going to whoever gives you the best deal. No idea about any other kinds of motorsports.

I've subscribed to this thread so feel free to post any Qs about Bristol or Clifton and I'll be happy to help.

I've done the teamsport karting twice now. Not got any experience of other tracks but really enjoy this one. It's on concrete so quite slippy compared to other places (so I've been told) so you spend the whole time drifting :D
The raised corner followed by the hairpin is good fun too!

The Mall, which is very close to the Corrie Tap, is much better. For a start, you can actually sit down, you can hear what each other are saying and it's not a total sweat pit.

For a stag do though, CT might not be a bad shout.

Was it you that used to launch potatoes off a 3rd floor balcony at people outside??

No, I don't live on that road, but it sounds like someone I used to live with there. Seriously.

True, but none with such good cider (with the possible exception on the Apple)

The Apple is far better than the Corrie Tap! Especially since they sell Wilkins now.

All about Amoeba. PS. You still owe me a Guinness.

I did a Stag in bath & bristol this weekend just gone - we did three hour of climbing and abseiling in the Avon gouge with www.inspiredsports.co.uk for £35 per person.

It was great fun, very well run and pretty hard work. If you want something a bit different I'd highly recommend it but a couple of us (inc the stag) are climbers.

The Apple is definitely the place to go, and if the Old Duke has a band on that's a cool place (right next to the Apple) and makes a good launch pad. Reflex is a good haven for oldies on a night out, but has lost some of its 80's-ness of late.

If you feel like some REALLY good grub, Graze (Bath Ales restaurant), on the corner of Queen's square does amazing steak (like, really amazing) and is pretty reasonably priced for an upmarket joint. It's the kind of place you'd want to wear a shirt to though, so not really a ****-up starter.

If you feel like a bit of culture, the museum at the top of Park St. is free and quite cool (and surrounded by nice lunchy places to eat like Mission Burrito and Magic Roll to name 2 favs). From there, Clifton Village is a nice walk if the weather is nice, and a very short bus ride/walk to the zoo. Not very "lads" stuff, but nice if the sun's out.

As for where to stay, I can only really suggest hotels etc in the centre or B&Bs.
