I was on emergency tax for a month after starting a new job, so I believe I am owed a rebate. I'd just like to know how much I would be owed, and judging by their automated service they don't seem to like calls from people just finding this out.

I can't seem to find my relevant stuff out for their tax calculator, I know it happens automatically but is calling them to "speed" things up or find out how much I am owed frowned upon?

Basically speaking, total taxable income for the tax year minus tax free allowance (7475 for 11/12 tax year) multiply by 20% or 40% depending on tax bracket you are in = amount of tax due for the tax year. Compare to how much tax you have paid and the difference is the rebate.

Emergency tax refunds can be a bit of an urban legend, they do exist, but emergency tax is usually not far off what it should be. Most often if you're due a refund it's because you had a low income in the rest of the year before it happened.

My last emergency tax refund was just over £3.5k

I have just got a letter (3 in fact) from the tax man for this year saying they messed up my tax code and owe me another £1.3k for the last 2 years.

I quite like the taxman.

I don't know how much i have earned this year etc (mis placed the letters)

Were you employed for the previous 11 months and paid tax on your earnings?

Actually a better way to ask it is do you think you earned over £7475 in the previous 11 months

I tend to mis place a lot! In my situation would calling them be ok? They'll know how much i have earned no? Makes it easier anyways!

The first time I noticed I had issues with my tax was when my employer did not log my p45 from my previous job.

A quick call to HMRC (ok 40 mins on hold) and the nice lady looked at my tax details and confirmed that I was in fact due a refund. She also asked if I would like her to check previous years and she noted that I was also due a refund for 2 previous years as well. I was told to expect a calculation letter within 14 days and a cheque 14 days after that.

Sure enough 28 days after the call I had my cheque for £3500.

I did not even need the details of my previous employers she had it all and I just had to confirm a few things. I was very painless and straightforward.

Give them a ring but be prepared for a lengthy wait on hold to speak to someone.

Brilliant that's what I was looking for, i'd prefer they just told me there and then!

Just wasn't to sure with the way the automated message sounded a bit like, "please don't pester us if unsure, you will be notified".

Thanks everyone :) I'll call tomorrow on my lunch.

The automated response is a bit annoying but I can imagine they have hundreds if not thousands of calls a day with people with tax issues as well as non issues.

Like I said it took me a good 40 mins to get through, just left the phone ringing and on speaker until they picked up, but once through they were pretty efficient.

If you think that you are due tax back from last year you might have a bit of a wait.

I phoned at the weekend to check and they couldn't tell me if I was owed anything as my employer hasn't told them yet.

Was also told they are taking about 4 weeks to get through refunds at the moment.

I did the same and was tol that my current employer hadn't submitted the P60s yet?

forget calling them , 30 minutes hold to then be told they cant do anything until end of may when p60s etc are through and then palmed off

i know from experience that it sometimes takes them years to get round to doing the rebate if you dont go request it yourself too. theres lads at work only just getting them paid from 2008/2009

You will get it eventually, if you are due.

Just had £264 back from 2006 when I was made redundant after the firm I was working for went bust.

Oddly I have never had a rebate after 18 years yet have had 2 in the last year

Ah ok, i'll call them at the end of May then. I got a nice Tax rebate a few years ago with a very quick turn around, right before I left for holiday too which was a massive bonus!
