BlackBerry 10 unveiled (formerly BBX)

RIM are good at the security and securing the device, bad at the use ability of the OS. Hell, a blackberry takes way longer than an iphone to boot up, the menus are looking a bit old hat now, and Blackberry Appworld is atrocious.

Appworld is awful yes, and the bootup times are ****, but usability wise I would say for someone using it primarily as a device to communicate it is ahead of anything else. It, unlike android, doesn't feel like the 'phone' is tacked onto the OS, and hitting the call button will instantly bring up the dialer for example.

I'll be waiting for BB10 on a QWERTY device. Hopefully a slider this time so I can have a nice big screen again, but I do want to try out that touch screen keyboard. I'm the biggest hater of them but I really like that idea.

All rim had over android and ios was the physical keyboards and good messaging capabilities now they will loose th hw keyboard and it will be a direct competitor towards android and ios and hinestly i cant see RIM being able to compete.. they should stick to what they are good at and release some android devices too with bbm support :-)

LOL ermmm please show me where it says RIM will be ditching the physical keyboard and good messaging capabilities??. They would be absolutely mad to ditch the physical keyboard and messaging capabilities, that would be the end of RIM as we know it.

And ****ing great if they will be a direct competitor to iOS and Android, nothing gets innovation going than a healthy bit of competition;). I look forward to seeing Android and Apple being brought down a few pegs and hopefully RIM can do that with BB10.

they wont be able to do that lol.. not to ios and android as much as you want it to happen the best that is going to happen is them not bankrupting

The whole interface looks very swanky and polished. The keyboard looks pretty interesting and the camera time-lapse thing is neat, but none of those are the reasons I clicked this thread: ever since HP killed WebOS and Nokia abandoned Meego, QNX is probably the last chance we'll get at getting a fully-featured *nix OS in our pockets, rather than cut-down crippled versions of it like Android or iOS.

In fact, it's kind of a shame that RIM wasn't even talking about this at all, but I get it, they need to actually sell these phones to the punters who neither know nor care that this is a completely different OS than the previous versions, so I suppose they had to focus on the shiny effects and animations :)

I just hope they don't take ages to get phones in shops, they've been moving at a snail's pace with this thing! It was disgraceful that when they finally got the Playbook out it was missing messaging and email clients, even though they'd bought QNX and been sitting on it for so long before it was finally released! If they Playbook this one too then they might as well pack it in and call it a day. Never owned a BB but if QNX is good I may yet migrate to it!

Swipe gestures on the keyboard are straight from swiftkey, I wouldn't be surprised if they've licensed some of their patents! Looks nice but possibly a bit late.

Hmm? I own Swiftkey X and it doesn't use swiping to type?
Oh wait, do you mean Swype-style swiping, or do you just mean swiping up from a particular letter to get at the sub-options? If it's the latter then yeah, it's kinda like Swiftkey, but Swiftkey uses it for when you want to insert numbers or letters with accénts, whereas here they seem to be using it for predictions, which is more interesting.

Well, I hope buttons don't go the way of the dodo here like they did with every other smartphone! Nowadays it's hard to find one with a physical camera button! Call buttons are practically unheard of outside BB and Symbian!

The only reason I still loved my Blackberrys was the keyboard. I found it more comfortable and easier to type those long business emails and conversations. Now my initial thought is why get it if you can get an Android or iPhone? My guess is because of corporate users wanting to stick with them.

BB10 is looking sweet !

That photo app is awesome !!!

Any news on when the first bb10 phone releases ?

Well, they've got a year to get a phone out that I like, or I'm off with windows mobile. I like the curve for typing, and making calls, but for any other media stuff it is absolutely dire.

If they can keep to their core strengths while making the device easier and more fun to use, then they'll be onto a winner. They just need to release this stuff NOW!!

I may have my wires crossed between Swiftkey X and Swype!

Also that camera feature looks incredible, hopefully they've got it thoroughly patented before Apple have a go at it!

Tbh based on the estimated schedule that is far far too long to get phones out into the stores - if the phones are truly due to be out late this year then that almost certainly will either coincide or be after the release of the iPhone 5 - i.e. virtually no-one will know or care when BB10 phones finally slip into the stores as the spotlight will be all on Apple - and that's not even taking into account that both Windows 8 and Android Jelly Bean phones are estimated for Q3 release.

I also think the fact they are offering up to $10k to developers so their apps make at least $10k in the first 12 months speaks volumes in itself.

Looks pretty good to me, been using the basic OS on the Playbook and itching to see how it translates.
Was gutted it seemed they were ditching hardware keyboards but seems today they've said there will be hardware keyboards going forward but the first BB10 phone will be touch only.

Out of curiosity, What exactly do you expect to get from BB10 that you don't get from Android as far as '*nix OS' stuff goes?

QNX isn't exactly a commonly used product outside very proprietary systems, and it's not overly compatible with the other *nixes anyway, I don't see that it offers much over Android with the exception possibly of using Qt, but from a brief overview much of the Qt stuff will be 'hidden' behind API's anyway...

EDIT: Overall I agree with the "too little, too late" bit, yeah it's an OK UI, the keyboard looks interesting (but will probably be copied on Android before BB10 is out :p) and the camera has some neat features, but nothing massively new, and I don't think that's going to be enough to stem the loss of customers...
