Wayne Rooney has won the Premier League Goal of the 20 Seasons Award for his spectacular overhead kick against Manchester City.

The Manchester United striker's stunning goal in February 2011 was voted the best ever in a Premier League poll of hundreds of thousands of football fans from around the world.

The Goal of the 20 Seasons is the first award to be announced as part of the Premier League's 20 Seasons celebrations, which are designed to honour the players, managers and football that has taken place over the two decades of the world's most watched and supported football league.

The top three strikes garnered half of the public vote, with Rooney's overhead kick in the Manchester derby in February 2011 got 26% of the vote. Second, with 19%, was Dennis Bergkamp's impudent flick and spin goal against Newcastle United in March 2002. Third was his former Arsenal team-mate Thierry Henry, who took 15% of the vote for his flicked volley versus Manchester United in October 2000.

Shinned it. ;) :D

just a case of loads of Man U fans rounding each other up to vote, standard for internet votes

Don't thinks anyone really thinks its the best ever

Even if he hadn't shinned it, it is an overhead kick, not the first in the past 20 years, or probably the 20th, and it wasn't the best. Cisse's, Crouch's are both better than that, and RVP's, and that is this years alone. RVP on the end of the Eboue cross several years back, where he jumps, volleys and smashes it in from the edge of the box is freaking amazing goal, that is WAY better than this Rooney one, and that isn't the best goal the league has seen.

Thing is, these awards are stupid, and probably voted by online polls, and voted for by the few people that can be actually bothered to vote.

THe only unsurprising thing is it was one of the best goals of the previous year or so, people have short memories.

The fact that it got 26% of the vote, likely a very short list people could vote off and again, people who could be bothered being younger, short memories and errm, stupid.

yup

Was Trevor Sinclair's bicycle kick in the Prem? That was very hard to execute. I assume it wasn't as it wasn't even in the top ten.

I don't care what anyone says, my favourite goal is Bergkamp's against Newcastle. I'd be highly surprised if my opinion ever changed on that.

Glad to see most have the right view of that goal :)

He did well to score it, but it was a shinner.
