Along with the Witcher 2 and Walking Dead I’ve been having a somewhat sort of obsession with 2004/5 games..

I’ve found my ISO images (original CD’s that I put onto ISO as I threw the CD’s out) for –

Deus Ex – Invisible War
Thief – Deadly Shadows
Half Life 2 – always have this installed via Steam
Doom 3
Toca Race Driver 3
CMR 2005

All of these games run fine under windows 7 with patches, Toca Race Driver needed a No CD patch to run due to secure rom issues.

These are quality games and even to this day look really good, all of them you can crank up the AA, textures and res to MAX and I must say not one of these games would I consider poor to look at, but the gameplay is most certainly where its at.

Mid 2000’s were certainly a good time for PC gamers, would play all of these games on my trusty old ATI 9700 pro at 1024 x 768 with medium settings. Now I can enjoy using MAX settings at 1920 x 1080 with huge levels of AA applied.

It's nice to see Invisible War spoken of in a positive manner. I got it free with a GPU and took all the hate for it at face value and didn't play it for years. I was finally convinced to give it a go and was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Maybe with DE:HR having been such a big hit and having been a bit more stripped down than Deux Ex, people will be more open minded. Invisible War is more Deus Ex than DE:HR at least.

I wish there were some really decent mods for Fear (October 2005). I still like to play that every now and then. Such a polished game.

Best game of 2004 was FarCry.

Ah you see I purchased this game on feedback alone and I wasn't all that into it. It was certainly a very good looking game at the time, but then it kinda changed and went all alien/mutant or whatever they were.. and by then I'd lost interest and didn't play it anymore...

i'm sure there were plenty of PC gamers back in 2004/5 that really enjoyed far cry but I just lost interest, however Half Life 2 will be forever IMO best game of 2004..

Toca Race Driver 3 was an amazing game; I remember being amazed by, well, pretty much everything at the time.

Also, the multiplayer was great fun with mates. Good times.

I also enjoyed Quake 4 in 2005. I think that was released roughly around the same time as Fear.

Never purchased Quake 4, by the time Quake 3 had gone mostly multiplayer i'd lost all interest and left Quake at Quake II.

Isn't Quake 4 due for a release soon, or re-release on xbox360 and PC sometime soon?

The biggest problem for me with sequels is that they lose too much of what made the first title so good. A change in graphical styles, different voice actors, major changes in mechanics etc can and I think often do lose more than it gains, despite the effort that goes into it. The second and third titles e.g. Fear 2 / 3 are imo ok as games, but they aren't Fear. Too much, too far removed.

It's on Steam, and although I like the simplicity of some of the old school shooters, I certainly wouldn't pay £15 for it now. Pick it up when it's dirt cheap in a sale, and mod it. That's what I'll most likely be doing. :)
