PC gaming back in 2004/5....

I thought Thief 3 and DX:IW were lousy sequels

DX IW was criticised due to the length and lack of RPG comparable the first, but I actually enjoyed it more because of this.

Bit like how Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 were comparable with the first being more RPG.

I actually enjoyed Mass Effect 2 more then the first..

I never played any of the first Thief games - sadly. I saw the game running on xbox but not owning an xbox purchased the PC version.. It ran quite poorly at anything less then 1024 x 768 with hardly any AA applied on my 9700 pro if I remember, but still looked good at the time..

Toca Race Driver 3 was in fact purchased just after I upgraded to an 8800GTx and that game totally flew on it. Was totally gobsmacked by the DTM races..

If IW hadn't been a DX game it would have reviewed better.

It was a solid 6/10 title. Some interesting ideas and generally sound mechanics but some poor execution and on PC at least it was clearly suffering due to the lowest common denominator being XBox.

The fact that it was the sequel to the Best Game Ever just magnified these faults.

I’ve found my ISO images (original CD’s that I put onto ISO as I threw the CD’s out)
.

You know if you don't have the CD's anymore it is actually piracy. You have to have the originals still to be able to use the ISO's :p

No different from making an ISO and selling the game on.

+1

I actually liked IW quite a lot, and thought that it was an overall fairly solid game and sequel. Though, as you say, it had an especially difficult job to live up to in this case.

Toca Race Driver 3 was an amazing game; I remember being amazed by, well, pretty much everything at the time.

Also, the multiplayer was great fun with mates. Good times.

I still play this game never stopped playing it tbh, the only online racing game where you can you get in and go and have a decent race.

I basically liked it as a game and even thought some of the design decisions they made were wise.

I did finish the game liking none of the factions in play though. Maybe that's just subjective of me but I found them all irritating and gleefully murdered everyone in the last level. I'd have done in the omar too if I could.

Some balance problems (some combos of guns and addons renderred the game very simple), didn't like the ammo, didn't like the inventory and the step down in technology was huge.

DX presented you with some amazing levels. City blocks, secret bases, the statue of liberty.

This really made the game to my mind. It was immersive, it gave the level designers room to define the open ended gameplay. That demo with the statue is as clear a statement of intent as any game I can think of.

IW was such a retrograde step with those pokey corridor levels.

Oh dear. Well Cd’s are well gone, they got skipped a few years back, made ISO’s and stored them all to a 1TB drive as the 1TB drive takes up a heck of a lot less room then a big stake of CD cases etc…

Well if I can’t legally play the games then that’s a little unfair as I did buy them, but I just didn’t have room for the physical media anymore so threw them all out.

That’s too bad I guess – I want to play CMR 2005 and I’m not buying it again considering I paid full price for this game back in 2005.

Oh well, girlfriend spoke - 'get rid of all these cd's' and so ISO images they went and in the skip they all went after that..!!

Look, i'm lucky I can game on laptop otherwise I'd not game at all. lol I'm not allowed to sit upstairs and use a desktop, missus complains about me not being around so I have to use a laptop on the sofa..

Actually can't use the desktop now anyhow, baby uses that room - so i'm stuffed.. :p Rather have the ISO images and pick them off the 1TB drive anyhow...

Although, maybe I should have stored the CD /DVD's in the loft.. Hmm.. oops.

Not judging you m8, you chucked them away you didn't sell them on, so yeah they could have been sitting in your loft. Fact is you didn't sell or give them to other people to use. Was just stating a fact really :) Saying that someone may have saved them on the other end of the rubbish cycle ;)

Well, I put DiRT to an ISO image but then purchased DiRT on Steam for a few quid back in the codemasters racing game sales. Same for TOCA Race Driver guess I could do the same for other games I've got on ISO..

Isn't thief - deadly shadows coming to GOG.com?

Half Life 2 is assigned to Steam so I don't need a CD for this game..

Deus Ex IW is on steam isn't it?

The biggest problem for me with sequels is that they lose too much of what made the first title so good. A change in graphical styles, different voice actors, major changes in mechanics etc can and I think often do lose more than it gains, despite the effort that goes into it. The second and third titles e.g. Fear 2 / 3 are imo ok as games, but they aren't Fear. Too much, too far removed.

Not going for Max Payne 3 then? :)

HL2 and Cities and Heroes (for the gf) were the two I remember getting in 2004, the disappointing Black & White 2, followed by the awesome Psychonauts and Civ IV in 2005 :D

it never crossed my mind, in fact I remember throwing them as they were, in tact actually..

I didn't even smash them up, I just put them into plastic bags, and threw them into the skips at a rubbish tip..

It never even crossed my mind TBH. I really did, and I really did think I'd be fine to make ISO copies of games i'd purchased.

I've got ISO images of tie fighter, x wing, magic carpet, theme park etc you name it i've maybe got it somewhere on ISO...

Even F1 2010 as I got that on DVD before it went digital only.. That went into the bin as well.

and my DVD /Bluray collection is in MKV or AVI format... I've got XBMC installed to my latop and use a 1TB drive for these as well... but the DVD's are in the loft.

Can't be doing with phyiscal media anymore anyhow..!! :p

Next time you decide to chuck them all away let me know :) I love physical copies of games :)

CDs doesn't need an apostrophe people!

I always thought that just having ISO disks was a bit dodgy. Why throw away the original disks anyway?
