Hi guys,

Long story short, had a slightly burning smell from my PC while gaming recently, and I thought it was my newish GTX 570 burning off the "factory fresh" smell.

Recently it's gotten quite bad and I've investigated tonight, stressing out the GPU until my room stank! I was so sure it was the GPU I warmed it up to pull it out and give it a sniff test just after it turned off to find SHOCK HORROR! The smell is coming from my PSU!

It's a non-modular Cooler Master PSU which I got from ebay a couple of years ago and have been very reliable so far. But this means it has to go ASAP! (and looks like I need to dust off my XBox for some gaming ;))

I was looking at this, but it's currently out of stock: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-215-CM&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1103

Of course the efficiency isn't most important, but I do believe in being green where possible (where running a Fermi allows :D), so I would prefer a gold rated supply. Is there anything that is known to be as silent though? I've read some reviews of the Silent Pro Gold series and they've come out quite good! I want around 600 watt as I don't ever run SLI.

What would you all recommend? Not so specced up on PSUs!! Thanks! :D

If you want a "green" power supply (highly efficient) then you want a gold rated one. That one is out of stock, and otherwise your looking at this kind of price range.

More than I would consider usually, but I guess you might be saving money in the long run - I think gold ones are something like 5-10% more efficient. More importantantly, higher efficiency means higher quality components.

If you aren't so sure about the efficiency, make sure that it is at least a bronze 80+ one from a well known and reliable make. Antec, Corsair and XFX are generally very good, and you'll find any of their current stock on OCUK to be reliable, good quality pieces of kit which will last you many years.

If you let people know precisely what your price range is, more knowledgeable individuals than I will be able to spec you a specific PSU.

The NZXT Hale90 is a good PSU, silent, I can put my ear next to the fan and struggle to hear it. Also it's white, which can be a plus or minus depending.

It isn't "Fully Modular" as the 8-pin and 24-pin cables cannot be disconnected but hey, I'm sure you're going to be using them.

Worth a look if you have a white case. Also all of the modular cables are black so it looks quiet nice.
