Hating mainstream, preferring obscure things

Like what you like, dislike what you dislike, don't give a tart about what other people think or say and don't try and tell others what's good or not.

What comedy series was that from?
The first scene (s) were based all around Nessan Dorma becoming popular because of the World Cup and this bloke kept saying "I liked them before you".
Other weekly scenes followed where other classics would be played with normal people humming or singing along and this toff would repeat his catchphrase.
Something says Fast Show.

There's a difference between telling someone what's good and what they should like. Kerry King is a better guitarist than most, but I don't really like metal so I'm not in a hurry to listen to a Slayer record.

That's a matter of opinion. Dude's been using the same scale for all his solos since the inception of Slayer...

He's ace but better than most? In metal at least, I don't think so.
 
Today, everyone is a consumer, and has to pick from the same selection of goods as everyone else, and because of this people now define their personalities on how good their taste is, or how clever, or how obscure, or how ironic their choices are.

As Christian Lander, author of “Stuff White People Like,” pointed out in an interview with NPR, you compete with your peers by one-upping them. You attain status by having better taste in movies and music, by owning more authentic furniture and clothing.
