680 or 7970

I won't tell you what I paid for mine on launch day, it would upset you :D

Ha ha go on I can take it!

To be fair, I almost pulled the trigger on a 7970 on a similar price point and after seeing all the troubles people are having with crossfire I'm glad I didn't. I'm aware (before dave_beast and co start jumping up and down) that it works fine for a lot of users but I see a lot more crossfire issues than SLI issues.

Going SLI is my plan but I may sell and upgrade to the next generation. Undecided yet. You?

The reason I wont is I got banned for it before :D

Suffice it to say I wasn't prepared to pay anything more than Nvidia RRP + VAT on launch day, so when I saw they were £420+ I thought great I will save for GTX 780, however I had a voucher with one store that gave me £25 off so I did hit a price I was happy with.

Ive seen Gigabyte and VTX reference 7970's on a certain site for £348 which i think is bloody brilliant. Also the gigabyte 7970 with the dual fan on for the same price. im quite impressed with those prices.

Competitor talk is banned mate, I got banned just for saying what I paid for my 680

Given how close that two cards are, I'd take a look, see which group of fanboys annoy you the most, and then buy the other card. Make sure to post about buying it to rile them up.

Haha I can't believe anyone would become a fanboy of any product! Is that going to rile everyone up :)

I think I want a 680 because it overclocks itself and might be a little quicker and
The 3d might be better. Which will mean I wil pick up the benq monitor. Why is it I always want what's most expensive :(

The BenQ monitor is superb to be fair (I speak from experience) and if you want this monitor and want to try 3D out then it's the better option. Remember you've got to fork out for the 3D Vision Kit 2.0 as well if you go this route.

I've got both a reference Gainward 680 and a vtx3d 7970 x edition which is clocked at 1050mhz by default. Between the 2 cards there is nothing between them in performance. On benches the AMD card takes some and the Nvidia card the others. But it's only a few fps either way and you wouldn't notice the difference in real life situations. I've decided on keeping the 7970 and selling on the 680 because of driver issues. The 680 for me has a problem displaying games with vsync on and stutters. There is a big thread over at the Nvidia forums about it. If you are not going to be playing with vsync on then this is not an issue but for me I prefer to play games smoothly and the 680 does not do that for me. If I was in your shoes and didn't want to overclock I would consider one of the factory overclocked 7970's. I picked up mine a few weeks ago for an amazing price on OCUK (although I did have the 10% off voucher as well). I'm not sure if the extra memory of the 7970 will make the card more future proof but I play racing games online and can see it go up as far as 2gb usage so it's more or less maxing out the 680 there. The 7970 has more breathing space. I'm sure future games will use even more.

I've bought AMD every card I've ever got, but right now, I'd be spending my cash on the 680.

Mainly picking based on how I feel after looking over reviews and hearing things on forums...

If I'm honest it's the 3d kit on top that's stopping press the buy button. :(

Your gaming at 1920X1200/1080 so there is no need for dual card setup. Based on that I would get the 7970 because it's cheaper. If you require dual cards then I wouldn't bother with crossfire because of the problems. Having had multiple xfire setups and with friends that have had 7970 xfire it's simply not worth the driver problems.

My brother has a 7970 with passive 3D and I have to say how poor it is compared to 3D vision. Maybe his settings are wrong but it just didn't stand out like the active of nvidia.

He has seen my setup and admits he made a mistake. If you are interested in 3D, nvidia all the way IMO.

I meant to quote the OP sorry.
