Guild Wars 2

I never said they want to a "WoW killer" someone else did. I was pointing out they said WoW will only kill itself however they still state they want to beta WoW.

If WoW has 11 million subs and 6 million quit to play GW2, that leaves WoW with 5 million. GW2 beats WoW (more players) yet WoW is still far from dead with 5 mil subs.

He recognises that there's enough dedicated WoW players that it's going to be impossible to drag enough people away from it that it'll flop, it'd take Blizzard screwing up WoW to do that, but that doesn't mean it's impossible that GW2 could end up with more players.

He says directly...

But then says he want's to beat WoW. Contradicting himself I guess :/

It's called 'hedging', he's basically rhetorically covering his tracks. What he's saying is that he wants the game to topple WoW, but then to backdown and look as if he's not making 'fighting talk' or stating any lofty ambition, he makes the safe disclaimer "nothing is going to kill WoW but itself" (what a vague statement!).

I'm sorry but there is no way that GW2 is going to draw - and retain - 6 million subscribers from WoW. I know GW2 will be a huge game but it simply will not take a 6 million player chunk out of WoW's playerbase for any meaningful amount of time. As soon as the MoP expansion pack launches you can bet 3 out of those 6 million 'leavers' will resubscribe... and probably stay subscribed. This is just the way it goes in WoW and MMO history: gigantic new hyped-behemoth MMO comes out, everyone apparently 'deserts' WoW and leaves for it. Players go back to their old Realm Forum for WoW and gloat about how great their new game is and how "dead" WoW is, leaving 15-paragraph long complaints and /goodbye posts, being all dramatic like and acting as if they're basically committing online seppuku. 2 months later that amazing new "WoW killer" has kept a player retention rate of around 15% and the rest have, quietly and mutely, come back to WoW and are playing again on the servers they - only just before - denounced and laughed at. This has happened for about 4 different games now, and the cycle keeps repeating. People are looking desperately for a game big enough and good enough to replace the market dominator, but none really satisfy the itch. GW2 is in a whole different niche and design style so I cannot imagine it's going to take and keep 1/2 of WoW's subscriber base. This is silly talk. 6 million sales =/= 6 million players stolen from WoW.

Does it look better in the flesh?

As in the videos I've seen the graphics look very poor in comparison to Tera

After playing both games for a few days, I think the graphics in Tera are better quality. But the styles aren't really comparable: GW2 goes for a sort of stylized post-impressionist, pastel-shaded look (although some of the races are definitely... Asian... influenced) and TERA is out-and-out fantasy anime, with loud colours and over the top everything. You can't compare fairly though as GW2 was in Beta stages so performance and visual style were, presumably, very limited. TERA scales quite well though because it is on the Unreal engine, which is something to think about if you are hardware limited. Again though, give GW2 the chance to be optimized before making any final conclusions on visual quality :).

can we stop with wow vs gw2 please?

Sorry I didn't realise there 'was a thing', I just clicked on the most recent page of this thread and saw a discussion about it. Didn't see any sign people were getting aggravated. Christ this thread is such a sensitive namby-pamby discussion. I bet the mods are sick of everyone's tears.

I see after backtracking a page that people are discussing LotRO as well. Aren't you offended by them as well? Pathetic.

wow vs gw2 generally ends up in a bitter childish argument. :(

I don't really think there's any point in comparing the games tbh. But people seem hung up on what the ArenaNet head developer said about a "WoW killer". Not even talking about the game now, just in pure business terms... it won't take 6 million players away from a game they have been playing for 5,6,7 years. It just won't happen. That's all I'm saying.

I'm going to play both MoP and GW2. Can't be that hard can it? MoP for the content and pandas, GW2 for the social side with my mates.

Yes.

The fanboys on both sides have drawn battlelines and if you attempt to play the two you will be accused of being a spy and be hung, drawn and quartered and all your accounts deleted forever more.....

DUH DUH DUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.......

To extend onto this, I think GW2 has better environmental art and I think the world is more interesting, though this is probably a byproduct of how the questing system works.

But Tera has much better enemy models imo, a lot of them are amazing, even straight out of the gate. The armor and weapon skins, even early game are pretty good looking as well. As above though, it is lumbered with some horrible anime tropes which I really dislike but am looking past for the present.

Re: gw2 - from GAF.

Did this monstrosity make it into the final game? You’ll have to play to find out.

A point of discussion is - are all world bosses going to be static? The ones we have seen:

Tequatl (Bone dragon)
Issormir + ? (Frost wurm bosses, I forget the seconds name)
Shadow Behemoth
Undead Pirate Ship
The Shatterer
Concept Art Boss ^

I think there was some gameplay footage of a cyclops/giant boss who walked around, but cant seem to find it.

LOTRO very foolishly lets you start playing while it's still streaming the client, so your initial play experience looks absolutely rubbish, because they download lo-res textures to get you going. I've never understood why they do it, people take one look at it and unintstall. Give it time and you get this :

Lotro graphics are fantastic and the game world was amazing to explore. I actually got the same feeling when I was walking around Kessex Peak in the GW2 beta, lush animated world and open freedom to run around and explore it, but with much improved combat over most other MMOs.

I said to my guild that GW2 felt like I was playing a lovechild of Lotro and GW1, with much better combat than both, imo it has combined the best of open world gameplay and good challenging combat.

I was just checking out Tera on line today. It looks good, but is it in the same class as Guild Wars 2?
