1st attempt at a custom loop

Your choice of res does not suggest any specific pump. Personally I don't like separate reservoirs anymore and would always go with a DDC with an XSPC res-top as it increases the flow, simplifies filling and reduces tube lengths further helping flow rates.

This also would do the trick

thanks for the reply :)
which is the better pump there?

where do i actually mount the pump/res combi?

could i add a cpu into the loop with that setup?

Better going for a DDC 18W or a D5 vario for the pump.
I have used res top pump/res combo and there is not much difference with a tube res or a bay res when used with an aftermarket good top for a DDC 18W.

Edit:
What case are you having, also what CPU?

this pump?

will this top fit?
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=WC-058-AC&groupid=962&catid=2141&subcat=2143

do i mount the pump in a 3.5" bay? do they need to be a certain way up?

my case is a pnzrbox so a triple rad wont fit in it but thats not a problem
iv got an ivybridge cpu

No that top is for this pump http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=WC-004-SW&groupid=962&catid=2141&subcat=

You can mount the pump anywhere you want. and yes they do need to be a certain way up

Get a pump-top combo
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=WC-300-OK&groupid=962&catid=2141&subcat=2145
or

in your case, DDC18w with a XSPC res top would do fine as well.

You will have to do some research on what RADS to fit inside that case!
there are 2 x 190mm fans and 1 x 120mm fan in that case(if it is nzxt pnzrbox?)
With a simple google search I found a mod with a 240mm RAD on the top side of the case.

Usually a pump can be any way up(as long as you don't let it run dry) but it is better to have the water flowing to the inlet as less restrictive as possible.

yeh thats the case but il be mounting the rad outside the case

Why use a bay res and then an after-market top for the pump? Of course if budget is unlimited and form is more important than function, go ahead. Knock yourself out.

If function is more important than form, the bay res adds nothing to the loop over a res-pump combo. In fact it detracts as it increases the loop length and adds more joints.

If your budget allows for the extra cost, you'd still be better off using the money for better blocks or fans rather than bling.

But what do I know? I water-cool for the cooling not the looks.

youve got the wrong end of the stick completely. im new to water cooling read the title!
i understand that i either get a bay res or a pump top res not both.

trust me its 100% function over form thats why il get a rad that wont fit in the case and put it outside

i bought all the bits and im building it now but iv hit a problem.
the ek block for the gpu is taller than stock which is great for tubing but it means the psu wont fit in my pnzrbox case :(

so i need a case but which 1?
iv got 650mm height (-space for airflow with a top fan) and about 550mm depth under the bench width doesnt matter at all

i take it its fine to use antifreeze in the loop?

iv got an idea that would deffinately drop the temps

why do you say that?

Elysium will be more than capable of handling couple of RADs :)
But I am glad you have changed you mind about using a freezer to cool an external RAD!

Oh and Antifreeze is not needed(not advised as well) if you use a pre mix coolant!

the elysium case is huge! iv got a 3 x 120mm rad and it could go in the top or the bottom and i think i could get a 4 x 140mm in the front!!!

i think im gonna put the psu at the top and the rad at the bottom but il see what the tubing would look like if i do
