Just got a court summon for TV licence

I'm not sure if this maybe only applies in Scotland but when I was renting out my flat I got told to take my TV as I would be liable to pay the TV license for the tenant if I didn't.

Not sure how true that is but it's what I was told by the rental agency. Maybe could get the landlord to pay for it OP. Though, if people are silly enough to let them in and turn the tv on it is really your own fault.

Apologies if it has already been covered, cba reading the entire thread.

Probably already mentioned.....

Have them tell you WHEN you were apparently caught watching that show.

If it turns out to be on the same day this fellow strolled into your residence then.... BAM.... Tell them where to shove their papers!

I remember the story from my best mate up at uni in the first year.

It was in one of the first few weeks in first year halls. Got a call from a mate on the ground floor saying tv license are being escorted round to everyones room checking for a license. Naturally as a first year with a uni person escorting this tv bloke round you wouldn't say no unless you were a hardcore all knower lawyer type.

He was a lawyer type so helped everyone out in his flat by getting them to put their tvs in his room.

The look on the TV Licensing muppet's face was priceless and when questioned why he had soo many tvs, and he replied:

'I like watching every channel at once' :D:D:D

Oh and OP, you fail at life.

"Oh, you want to see the TV on ? Let me just plug it back in, was using the iron"

* 1. Bend down behind tv
* 2. Clatter about loudly with cables, while unplugging signal cable discreetly
* 3. Make obvious "plugging in" sound with tv plug

"See , not tuned or plugged in"

You know, or , don't let them in !

Bang to rights I'm afraid.

Your best option is do what I do, let them in, but - and this is the trick - be sure you have no TV equipment in the house whatsoever, despite demonstrating this to various TV men, I still get plagued with veiled threats from the TV licence Gestapo.

I have nothing to hide, by having a TV in the house, I'd say you did & he got you accordingly.

Legitimate question:

You can watch a live stream on tvcatchup.com on 3G signal.. What's the law on doing this on, say, a train?

(Is a student, pays for a tv license)

It's covered under your TV license as under any location:

"Any device powered solely by its own internal batteries (i.e. it is not connected to an aerial or plugged into the mains)." is covered. See here:

the best option is to tell htem to get lost and come back with the police if they want entry (then put your TV under the bed for a few weeks) and be as rud as possibly... if you have a dog jsut let it bark and jump up at them..

they sent really threattening letters to my other half's mum demanding money even though she was almost dead..

Huh, makes sense, although I had no idea that you needed to be covered on the move.

You do wonder if the need to prove you were covered if watching a live stream on a mobile would ever arise, though.

a) if you 'don't watch TV' why was it connected up???
b) As someone has said £20 each for a licence is what.. 10 student pints of beer???

God help you when you experience the real world! :p

You don't need a licence to own or use a TV, only if you use it for live television. A tv used for consoles or hooked up to a computer to stream iPlayer (after it's been on tv) is perfectly fine without a licence.
