I need a new mobile phone

Hey all.

I have a Motorola Defy running at 1ghz with a custom rom.
The earpiece speaker doesn't work and I have replaced the part, with no luck.
I am tired of getting used phones from ebay as I have no comeback 6 if they break a few months after I have owned them.

I have a new contract sim - £5 per month for 600 mins, unlimited texts/internet from T Mobile. Obviously I snapped their arm off, but I still require a new phone.

A few comments on my views so far:
- One X. A friend has one. Lovely phone, but £450.
- S3. Not tried one but £500 for the 16GB version is very expensive.
- One V. A respectable £225 with Android 4.0 but it is essentially a 2 year old HTC Desire with the latest software on.
- Iphone 4S. No way am I paying £400 for a dual core phone with a sub 4 inch screen. Quite simply the competition is better.
- S2. Not cheap yet as the S3 isn't in stores yet. A bargain £200 buy in 6-8 weeks time?

As my name suggests, I am open to suggestions on phones! I would like Android though.

Well, everyone knows what I will suggest  :p

One S?

If storage and excellent battery life (with extended battery) along with better 1080P video recording is very important to you, then the GS 2. The one S beats the GS 2 in pretty much every other area and in some areas by A LOT.

You get 25GB of dropbox storage for the next 2 years though with the one series mobiles to try and make up for the lack of SD card and limited internal storage (10GB for fims, photos etc. and 2GB for apps)

The one S is also better than the V, 4S and in some areas better than the X IMO (better than X for performance, battery (better than the GN and GS 2 out of the box as well), build and perceived quality IMO).

My review of the HTC one S if you're interested:

Also the GN (galaxy nexus) is worth considering, it has a better screen than all apart from the X (although SAMOLED has its strengths compared to LCD/IPS) and has stock ICS, which is great! But is let down by poorer hardware overall compared to the S and GS 2, although it does have NFC if that is important to you.

As always best thing to do is have a play with them all in the shop particularly the GS 2, GN and the S as stock sense or even stock ICS OR stock touchwiz (highly unlikely though :p) may win you over in the end.......

Thanks for the help so far:).
When I looked online at the One S it was barely any cheaper than the One X so I do question how it fits into the HTC product range.
The Galaxy note is too big I am afraid.

Get a used Galaxy S2, don't neccessarily need to use Ebay

It isn't that they are broken when I get them, I have just had phones die on me circa 6 months after getting them and with them being used I have no warranty.
I don't drop phones or get them wet, I just seem to have had lots of bad luck!

You can buy it from three for £370 IIRC and you can then buy an unlock code from ebay for a few pounds IIRC to unlock the device so that means you can then use your t mobile SIM on it.

All good until the ebay code doesn't work and I'm stuck with a phone on a naff network :p.
For £370 I'd just go that bit further and get the One X :).

You didn't mention a budget?

Either way, it's probably wise to pick between the One X and Galaxy S III if you're not constrained by funds. Feature for feature the S3 is better but that doesn't mean it's better for you, it depends on your uses and which one you like more. To try the latter you'll have to wait until the end of the month.

I don't know from first hand myself on that now, but a lot of people here use the codes supplied by well rated sellers and they all work out just fine, no hassle from what I have read.

Well it sounds like you don't want to spend any more than is required and are having to justify the price of the X etc. so in that case wait till the GS 3 is out and get a GS 2 for less than £280. In the majority of daily tasks like browsing, phone calls, texts etc. you aren't going to notice a massive difference and certainly won't be worth an extra £200-250, at the end of the day, all that these "new phones" only really offer is better specs on paper and epeen benchmarks :p

I didn't mention a budget as I really don't know what I want, but I have the money for any of them, but I don't want to spend £500 on a phone that is not worth it as that is a lot of money.

Anything I have has slightly favoured the One X, but then I have skim read and often jump to the conclusion.

Well, it is easily worth it if you'll use the extra features.

What do you typically use your phone for? What stuff is important? Be as detailed as you can.

It's like the One X except you can work it with one hand.

You can work the One X with one hand, or at least I can. It's not quite as easy as the smaller phones but then you're getting a better screen experience.

If we were talking about a Galaxy Note then fair enough, but it's not even close to that.

Ill bite.. and you will not notice any difference in any of the tasks! S2 does and runs everything and will do so for quite some time without any problems!

Well you will notice some difference if you compare both side by side at stock in terms of instantaneous operation :p

But as I said the difference isn't massive and certainly not worth the extra £200 especially if the main uses are just going to be phone calls, texts, some browsing, the odd game etc.

I never said that the GS 2 would struggle with any tasks within the next few years either, just like every powerful android device :p

would you? i dont think i would notice anything TW laucher is actually very smooth and fast yes its not as good looking as sense :o but in my eyes one s has nothing over s2 they are pretty much equal in performance.. bar the one year release difference ;) quite some time for htc/other android phones to catch up with samsung :o

Yup I do :p

I had them both side by side the other night and mine just felt more "instant", both stock, except mine had a lot more apps installed.

I don't mean just the homescreens scrolling and app drawer, I mean launching apps/games, loading and rendering web pages, opening menus etc. granted this is also down to software optimization (and probably the largest factor) as well as the better processor etc.

Again the difference isn't HUGE, but too me it is noticeable personally.

And touchwiz launcher is great apart from the UI :p, it is very smooth and quick as well and at the time of release for the GS 2 it was certainly ahead of its time in terms of smoothness and speed overall, no mobile came close, but since ICS on the galaxy nexus and HTC's latest one mobiles, it is no longer the only fastest/smoothest mobile (again more so because of the software optimization)
