During a consultation 433 representations were received by Waltham Forest Council, with 412 objecting to the proposal and 18 supporting it.
As well as objections over the loss of the historic structure, there have been concerns from residents about the height of the proposed buildings and the impact of increased traffic.

What is the point of a consultation, if you don't listen to the people? I remember going to Walthamstow and it was great fun, it was not like it wasn't viable to run the family running it just sold out.

I think we should be more worried about the jobs created than places to live, what is the point of having places to live if there are no jobs?

It is not like it is even a very nice area and there is a ton of space, why if housing is so important is there none on that empty plot right next to it. http://i.imgur.com/RoEak.jpg

I hope Boris puts his foot down on this, getting rid of Londons history like that is really sad, North London really needs the dogs about, great night out.

To recap, the councillors who voted for the plans were Jenny Gray (Leytonstone ward, Labour), Asim Mahmood (Markhouse, Labour), Ebony Vincent (Markhouse, Labour) and committee chair Peter Barnett (Wood Street, Labour).
Those councillors who voted against were Ed Northover (Larkswood, Conservative), Alan Siggers (Valley, Conservative) and Liz Phillips (Cann Hall, Liberal Democrat).

4 Labour, 2 Conservative and 1 Lib Dem, our government is a joke.
 
you can't read much into the numbers for and against, the against are always going to be the ones that shout loudest
 
I'm glad it's gone. Thousands of dogs slaughtered each year in order to screw money out of people who buy the 'harmless fun night out' marketing tripe.

True, it does seem very strange all the labour members voted yes though.

The stadium is great though, we have all of our protected lands but we can't save our heritage, public opinion is for it to reopen, and as I said, jobs > housing at the moment in my opinion.

why has it been shut 4 years ? does this suggest that the public didn't actually want it or is there another reason it has been closed ?

I have only known / been to good greyhound kennels where they try to re home after they retire. They have a good life, there is something always going on, they a bitch(notinheat) and dog live in the same area. They get fed twice a day. They get walked once a day. They get to go in the "pen". They go on road trips racing.

I have only seen the good side, undoubtedly there is a bad side and shady owners that will put the dogs down after they have finished there career.

It is not really a reason to stop it, look at Battersea and how many dogs they have to put down a year it is horrific.

These dogs have a job, it is unfortunate some are put down afterwards but any good owner will try to rehome them if possible.

Because it got sold for development and any plans created have been declined.

They family that owned it cashed out, to reopen it as a dog track would be vastly less profitable, think £9m has been offered.
 
I used to work at Walthamstow dogs when I was 15 as a pot boy. Was a load of us from school who got jobs using each others birth certificates and peoples older brothers/sisters because you used to have to be 16 to work there. Was always tricky trying to remember to call each other by out fake names :p

I think that's the only job I have ever been sacked from in my life, as they started to get pot girls in and I spent most of my shift trying to chat up the new girls rather than clearing tables.
 
I think the fact they shut down operations in what is a long running family business demonstrates how it must be a tough business to run these days, and clearly not as popular as it once was.

Nobody wants to spend a deal of money on reopening a business that's not going to turn a profit.

With turning it to flats, I wouldn't have a problem provided they retain some of the original structure, given that it's a listed building. Realistically, what else are you going to put on this spot in North East London.... a bunch of shops? Creates a few jobs, but are they necessary?

Inregards to the empty space nearby, I believe that's the former stadium carpark, which is likely included in the redevelopment.

Couldn't agree more, greyhound tracks are dirty scum infested places anyway. Absolutely horrible venues if you ask me, just ****ed up chavs who aren't bright enough to understand horse racing.

We have much better preserved history in London than a dog track.

I guess all of our group of young professionals in a variety of good jobs are all just a bunch of chavs for going then :rolleyes:

If it has been closed for years and has no other purpose then I'm all for new housing in london. But don't for one second think it will help people that much. The builders and owners will be the ones raking it in and those moving in will still be screwed out of money to live in some plasterboard indentikit flats. London living, oh how I don't miss it :D
