was wondering if anyone had stats of 2 x 6970 twin frozr III's in crossfire against a stock GTX580 as im torn between the two, will also consider a single GTX680 if the price is right (max budget is around 400-450 at a push). One thing swaying me towards the twin frozr's is that i could purchase one now and then when i have the cash a month later get the 2nd one, instead of having to wait 2 months to get a 580/680

A 670 not enough???? Yet you are toying over putting a gtx 580 in your rig to last at least 3yrs....Even though the 580 is slower???

im confused also, as a 670 is pretty much on a par with a 580 as far as i have seen, therefore why would i pay more for a card that preforms pretty much exactly the same?

just did, its about a 5-10fps on lower range difference on avg and about 8fps difference on high/ultra.....so not exactly massively different, also that doesnt take into consideration any overclocking (which the card will be watercooled if single, if dual (and i aint ruled out a 7970 either) then it obv wont as there aint much point) so as far as i can see, it aint a huge difference.

One thing i should have mentioned before also is that i will be running a linux based server, so may go for nvidia due to less driver issues

have had a look and after the great advice given above, im, now torn between a twin frozr 7950 and a gigabyte 670, both are roughly the same cost, and pretty much the same preformance, so it will come down to cooling and noise under load that makes my mind up, any input on either of these factors would be really useful, thanks in advance

From the reviews of the gtx 670 that I have read, It is faster than the 7950 and techpowerup have it as 14% faster, That said can you justify the price diff of £40? That is the cheapest 7950 vs cheapest 670, If you have the budget then imo you should always go with fastest single card you can afford and given that the Nvidia drivers are seemingly better than the AMD drivers it might be wiser to go with the GTX670, It also seems that some folks are finding that the 670 is a good clocker.

I wouldn't use Anandtech for anything other than power consumption and temperatures tbh. The games Anandtech use either favour AMD or Nvidia to a large degree. I usually use overclock3d.net because they generally speaking give more accurate results (even if they do not yet have a GTX670 review up). The GTX670 is faster than the 7950 and on par with the 7970 at stock, but when overclocked the 7950 trades blows with it and the 7970 beats it.

However, at this point you are talking quite small percentages. The 7950/670/7970/680 are all very close to each other, you almost wouldn't really notice it.

For my money, the 670s are so cheap at the moment that you almost can't knock it. You may lose some percentage points to the 7970 when both are overclocked, but at £320 (£40 cheaper than the 7970 and only £20 more than the 7950) it's a good compromise between the two
