Swapping X58 i7's on same motherboard?

I've laid my hands on a hex core i7 970 at a favourable price. So am going to whip my i7 930 out of my Asus P6X58D-E board, and throw in the 970.

May seem like a slightly stupid question, but just wondered if anyone could enlighten me as to whether I need to reset CMOS or anything like that before putting in the 970? My 930 is overclocked to 3.8, so presumably I need to reset the motherboard to factory defaults before I put the 970 in?

I'd say first thing to check is whether your BIOS version supports the 970, or whether you need to flash it. After that I would expect the BIOS settings to return to default when the new CPU is detected anyway.

nice, that was my original plan for upgrading but i cant find reduced price hex core cpus anywhere. I can build a 2nd ivybridge render box for same price as a new low end hexcore.

Flashed my BIOS to the latest verson a couple of months ago, so it definitely supports the 970.

Thanks for the info, most appreciated.

When i changed from my 920 to my 990x, I just put it in and then went to the bios. It all looked to be default values anyway, even though it was an overclocked 920 beforehand. Like meatloaf said, I would at least check the voltage just in case.

Probably best to select the default option in the Bios if it has one, not the optimized one, but the other one. I forget the name.

From there on I did some reading on my CPU and guides on how to overclock this particular model.
