Which 4GB GTX 680?

Hi,

Here's a question to all of the people that know more about GPU overclocking than I do....that's everybody then! :o

After buying a triple monitor setup (XL2420T), I've been holding back from upgrading my poor old 1GB 5870* to a GTX 680 4GB. I've been waiting for the EVGA FTW cards because I like the idea of the 3 years (extendable) warranty, but I'm a little bit disappointed to find out that the memory clock is set to the stock speed of 6008MHz.

I've seen that the 4GB Palit and Gainward cards are set to 6300MHz and what makes it worse it that the Gainwards are in stock now, tempting me! :p

My main questions are:

1. Do you think the EVGA cards would clock easily to 6300MHz? Is that considered a fairly average OC because I don't understand why EVGA would leave the memory at stock unless they think it would be unstable?

2. Would I see much of an improvement between 6008MHz and 6300MHz? It increases the bandwidth to 201.6GB/s, so I'm guessing there might be, but I'm not sure if that equates to real world use in FPS?

I noticed that the KFA2 4GB card which has the same core clock speed of 1110MHz is also set to 6008MHz, so maybe it's to do with that because the Palit and Gainward run at 1084MHz.

*Just for the record, I think my 5870 has been the best card I've owned. It still plays everything at a reasonable level, it's just the 1GB is really struggling at 5760 x 1080. Games like Serious Sam 3, TF2 and Burnout Paradise still run brilliantly, but others like Skyrim, (with texture pack) and Grid have moments of 1 FPS and it's making me feel guilty putting the card through it and watching it struggle! :p

Wow! I didn't realise that some people were getting that level of OC, I'll be happy if I can get near the 6200 to 6300MHz area like the 2GB cards.

Although, after seeing the reviews of the GTX 670 today, I'll probably go for one of those over the 680 because I don't think I can justify the extra £200 for the small increase in performance.

Thanks for your help. :)

With the 670 so close to the 680, I would be inclined to go that way with the EVGA 4GB variant. That way, you could add another for much less later on if needed. Check out some of the reviews on these cards.

Edit:

What Cleee links too :p

That's exactly the card I've chosen, that or the superclocked one.

When I saw Gibbo post up a list of all of the 670s and I saw the 4GB EVGAs there, I was ready to buy - and I probably would've been reckless and bought 2 of them considering I've been waiting for ages for the EVGA 4GB 680 and two of these would've only been around another £180-200, (not that it's cheap, but definitely better value having two cards for the extra money - It'd be £100 cheaper than a 690 and have 4GB per GPU instead of 2GB).

I was gutted when I saw that they weren't going to be in stock until the end of the month, the same as the EVGA 680s....:(

Meh :p

You've already waited a long time, what's another month? ;)

Besides, the 5870 is still a capable card :)

That's true, I'm sure I can wait if it means saving £200. ;)

You're right, the 5870 plays quite nicely on a single screen, it's just when I try getting it to run Skyrim at 5760 x 1080, it looks at me as if to say, "You want me to do what??!!":eek::eek:.......

:p
