480 SLI to 670...

To a single 670?

You'll see no gain at all, infact it may be a downgrade.

Why do you want to get rid of 480 SLI?

Personally, the only reason is noise i.e. location of the PC would benefit from it being quieter.

Other valid reasons could be power draw and heat (for other users).

Performance-wise, I do believe it will be a slight downgrade at the max FPS level, but an upgrade at the min FPS level...

That is true.

However, it's too ,much of a sidestep IMO to be worth the money loss.

I'd recommend sticking some good 3rd party coolers on your 480's to quieten them down :)

Thing is, most 3rd party coolers make the gpu triple slot. Would watercooling be a better option?

If so, how much does a full WC setup cost?

£400 including blocks for a high end watercooling solution.

However, depending on your needs, this figure can go up or down :)

Id say its worth it for the immense reduction in power consumption!

I'm going from SLI 560 tis to a single 670 myself, out with the old, in with new.

i was thinking of getting the 670's to replace my 570 gtx 2.5gb that i have in sli and watercooled.. with what cle just said im now thinking not :P

From someone who can't cope with the noise of a single 480, I'd say it's worth it. Not sure so much about performance though.

I'd upgrade from a 480 to a 580 if I could get a quiet cooler. I'm not sure I'd go 480-570 for a quieter, cooler, less draw experience. Which when you consider the 480~570 performance, that's probably more your situation.

For you watercooling might be an idea. You won't pick up any 480 waterblocks new but they're in the £40 region second hand.

Ofc, the alternative is to wait for GK110 towards the end of the year - sure, the 480s will have depreciated in value, but there is more performance to be had at the same price point as a current 680.

After looking at a lot of the 670 BF3 benchmarks (my main MP game and the most technically demanding game I own) I can see that the min FPS is excellent, but I would definitely be stepping down in overall performance. I will probably stick with the 480s if no bargains present themselves.

As an aside, its quite disappointing how virtually none of the 670 SLI reviews use 480s in SLI for comparison...
