Issues with new Gigabyte Windforce OC 7850

Hey all

So, I've spent the last hour and a bit trying to sort out an issue with my new Gigabyte HD 7850 that I just took delivery of today. After removing the 12.4 Cat drivers from my old 4870 installation, rebooting, and then installing Cat 12.4 with the 7850, I get lots of flickering on the screen, particularly when switching windows or opening programs. That was taken by me earlier using my iPhone. As you can see, everytime I switch to another window, the screen gets these black and white boxes that flicker all over in random places.

I've recorded a video of it - here.

So here's what I've done so far:

Removed the old Cat drivers. Used Driver Sweeper to remove any traces of all drivers. Installed the 12.4 Cats fresh, and then did the same process above and tried the 12.3's. I've reset my BIOS, even flashed it to the latest version (which isn't new anyway). My board is a Gigabyte P35-DS3P, with a Q6600. I bought the graphics card in preparation for an upgrade to Ivybridge, figured I'd get a bit of a benefit from the card now anyway, especially with Diablo III around the corner. The weirdest thing, is if I load into Heaven, it flickers loads whilst loading, and then when it renders the 3D it seems to be ok, only flickering when it switches between scenes in Heaven. Also, when I go into AMD OverDrive, it shows the core speed as 150MHz, and the RAM speed as 300MHz. When I run something it jumps a little, but then when I close it down it drops back down again. Is this normal?

I've got another PC that I'm gonna try it on in a bit, but that runs Windows XP 32-bit. If it is the card I'll know soon enough.

Has anyone ever seen this issue before? Is the card knackered?

Thanks all :)

Oh I forgot to add that when I recorded a video using software on my PC, the issue didn't show. It only happened when I recorded it on my monitor from my phone, but obviously I get the issue everytime I switch windows (except when the drive is installed, but Windows goes into Basic mode too which might be why).

If no joy, then try this.

Goto: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\profiles .xml

You have to change those two values (I set them to 70000 and 80000)

<Feature name="CoreClockTarget_PCI_VEN_1002&DEV_6819&am p;SUBSYS_25531458&REV_00_4&2D68EC9A&0& amp;0008A">
<Property name="Want_0" value="70000" />
<Property name="Want_1" value="97500" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="PowerControl_PCI_VEN_1002&DEV_6819&S UBSYS_25531458&REV_00_4&2D68EC9A&0&amp ;0008A">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="MemoryClockTarget_PCI_VEN_1002&DEV_6819& amp;SUBSYS_25531458&REV_00_4&2D68EC9A& 0&0008A">
<Property name="Want_0" value="80000" />
<Property name="Want_1" value="120000" />
</Feature>

This I found on another site and has worked for quite a few others with the same problem as you. Change the values under the Bold Italic writing to the values shown.

Ohh and save as read only then restart your computer. Also make sure AMD Overdrive is enabled in CCC

Changing this has sorted the issue, but obviously up until CCC loads up, the issue is still present at the login screen and all subsequent screens until it loads and then reads these settings from the .xml file. What is causing this card to default to such low 2D clock speeds? Is this a failure of my chip / card that is likely to cause issues in the future, or would I be likely to have this problem with others I might buy as well? I can RMA the card tomorrow if it is a general failure with my card. Am I likely to have this issue with a new PC if I move to Ivybridge, which I plan to do in the coming months?

Edit: Reading around, it would appear that this is more generally an issue with the Catalyst drivers that are out at the moment. Hopefully AMD addresses these problems soon.

Basically it is the 2D settings. The 2D clocks are too low and hence the flickering. I have no idea how this could be altered except for a bios flash on the GPU. Maybe a new BIOS will be worked on soon so keep an eye on Gigabyte or even email them about the issue.

Nothing wrong with the card, just the base 2D clocks are too low.

Glad you are sorted though :)

Thanks for all the info and help gregster. I'd have likely sent the card back if it wasn't for your find :)

I have sent a technical support query to Gigabyte about the issue. We'll see if they can test it and fix it with a BIOS revision :)

No probs and hopefully Gigabyte will have an answer that sorts it out at bios level :)

I've just edited the profles.xml file as above (although the xml was slightly different on my machine, last part of each line is amp;0018A not amp;0008A.

Anyway. It's still flickering...

Also goes mad when playing flash video.

Did you enable AMD OverDrive before editing the file, then close it down, and then edit, save, and mark as read-only, followed by a reboot? The first time I went in and changed it and saved it, I closed down CCC in between editing and marking as read-only, so my first restart I still had the issue because the changes in the file had been reverted after I closed down CCC.

Fixed it by enabling overdrive in CCC.

Card was clocked really low at stock.

I had uninstalled CCC and just left the drivers at first. I had to reinstall CCC to stop the flicker.
