Fat fighting kids parks

Yet when I spotted one in my local London Park, I was surprised by just how many people were using it. Not everyone can afford, or wants to have a gym contract, so that's why they have proved to be quite popular.

They might be using it but it's not doing anything. Makes them feel good about themselves but that's about it.

They've got some in a park near a chav estate in Leicester, I was over there a fair few times whilst seeing an easy rider & every time I walked my dog pasted them they were empty. < Ooo legitimate roll eyes. :D

Can I ask you to quantify that statement? Because I'm going to go out on a limb and say some exercise > no exercise. Which is exactly what these outdoor gyms provide, for free.

i think the point is as long as they encourgage people to do more than they would anyway its better than nothing i hope they dont get abused tho cause some prat will probably try and nick one or ruin it

Your body tends to get stuck at a certain weight and it takes a huge amount of exercise to kick it out of it. Those machines look next to useless unless you are thrashing the hell out of them for 2 hours a day.

Being thin is 90% diet.

Personally I think diets are a bit gay... watching what you eat like a woman  I believe there's no such thing as over-eating, only under-exercising. However "under-exercising" is something like under 10 hours a week, for me anyway.

its about enough exercise for joe public to remain more helthy compared to doing nothing

they are not a replacement for gyms for regular exercisers tho

and any for some people is better than none at least your giving the oppertunity to some that wouldnt get it or think about it normally

LOL KWERK

Don't know why they can't build this style of adult 'workout park' in the UK:

I've never seen one at least? I imagine they're hard to vandalise without an angle grinder or something too :p

So you think these machines, designed to help people get access to exercise equipment, are pointless? Even though you acknowledge the importance of exercise to getting fit?

You would burn more calories walking up a hill or going up and down some steps than using those machines.

How much would you increase your upper body strength walking up a hill/steps as opposed to using one of these machines?

You've missed a key point; most of the equipment in these parks is not for cardio work outs, its for gentle weight training. Which is why the one near me is so busy, as it gets used by local joggers as part of their routine.

Was going to say that there's loads of these in the far east, but mostly used by the elderly. Dunno why the communist is relevant though :p.

Communism isn't really relevant here but there was a vague opportunity to throw in the phrase and by golly it was going to be seized.

I've noticed a few of these outdoor gyms while going about here and thought it was quite a good idea, not massively tempted to use them myself except out of curiosity but then again I've got a gym membership that I use instead.

How do you increase it on those machines which appear to have zero resistance? I've seen those leg ones before and they just swing your legs, they actually reduce the work

Only useful for very old people. No use to fat people or children.

The government building useless outdoor public gyms with tax payer money for the feel good factor is basically communism.

This! You can get really jacked just from doing this stuff, especially when you add a weight vest. It's much more fun than weights too.

The problem with fat kids is not the kids eating junk, it is their parents fault for letting them eat it!

The solution lies with tackling the cause, not tackling it once the kids are already porky.
