Hi all,

Hoping the collective expertise of the forum could help me diagnose what's going on with my car paintwork.

At the edges of the paintwork, on two of the back panels (offside rear panel and the bit just above the boot lid) the paint is chipped or the lacquer is peeling, I can't work out what it is.

Does anyone know what has caused this, and how much it would cost to get it fixed? Should I get it fixed sharpish incase the chipped bits erode more, or can I leave it until I really get annoyed with it/sell the car?

Car in question is a 2005 Z4, is it a common paintwork defect that the lacquer peels?

Is that a Z4? Looking at all the weird white splodges under the laquer it looks like its had a crappy respray at some point in the past.

Yeah, Fox, it is. I was worried it might have been that, as the boot lid seems to have small dimples in the paintwork too. Should I be worried, or is it likely just correcting a large scratch or something?

How much would it cost to get it fixed?

Have a good look around the rest of the rear of the car. It could be anything from a correction of some damage to the boot to a repair job on the rear end, impossible to tell without looking.

This may sound stupid, but what should I be looking for specifically? There was nothing obvious about it when I bought it (Aug 2011) and the panels all seem to line up properly.

Garage stated that HPI checks are done on all their cars, but coming to think of it I never saw the certificate.
I foolishly assumed that because they had conducted a check, they would have stated if it had been crashed into? Is this a wrong assumption?

A HPI check doesn't record accident damage it records cars which have been written off. You can do £3000 worth of damage to a £2000 car and it'll be written off and recorded and show up in a HPI check.

You can do £10,000 wort of damage to a £20,000 car and it gets fixed by the insurance company and is completely unrecorded.

I suspect it was just something minor.

HPI check won't show if it's been in an accident it'll only show if it's been an insurance write off.

It could be just a dink or scratch but with metallic they do like to spray the whole panel or blend in a large portion of it, my guess is they taped up to that edge and it's left a sharp edge which is vulnerable to flaking.
