It'll be a massive waste if you don't diy and I think you'll be hugely disappointed putting that much power in a mk4 without shelling out loads on handling which ruins what the car is really about. Get a proper gti or just something faster
I remember the days when 6 secs was considered very fast
The 4Mo is definitely a unique car. A bit walloy and not that fast when standard. But a lot of the R32 parts fit on it and it can be improved. The question, though, is whether it's worth spending the money on an older car.
Also bear in mind that a newer performanec car may be in a higher tax bracket.
How about an S3? Faster than the 4Mo, chippable, with Haldex too.
Or a mk1 TT 1.8T 225 for £4k and then spend £1k on suspension mods and chipping it.
get onto edition 38 forums
normally a charger kit or 2 for sale there
pick up a 3.2 lump and drop it in, more or less a bolt in job, same block etc
set you back circa a grand for a known good lump and will gain you 45 bhp straight away
I would have thought an S3 would have been the way to go too - if you put in that £4k plus the £1.5-2k the car is worth you should be able to find a car that's had a remap and some suspension mods done. You'll then have an out of the box car with approx 260bhp, still has the haldex 4wd, should be 6s or under - but more importantly you'll be able to recover a reasonable amount of the money if you have to.
It may need to be a pre facelift but if the lights bother you that much it's not greatly difficult to wire up a loom for the facelift units, I also still quite like the interior of the S3 even now.
The S3 looks pretty interesting actually. It's undoubtedly going to be a better car all round. Having said that though it's only a few tenths of a second faster and around £3000 for a 2000 model with plenty of miles on the clock so hardly a bargain buy. I guess it could depend on the performance gains possible from chipping them.. the other thing of course (presumably the reason it remaps well) is that it has a turbo which could throw up expensive bills.
The TT - aside from being a woman's carp) - if I got one I'd have to get the convertible (as basically the only point in getting the coupé is to save money, and I'd regret it for ever), and the V6s are over £5k apiece. The 1.8T Quattro could be done though - although it's £3k for uber high mileage 2000 examples with not much choice.
Thanks I'll look into it. How much would it be to buy and fit the 3.2L engine, do you know? As that was a potential option (but probably too expensive to be worth it).
to buy the engine your looking around a grand for a known good unit complete with ancilliries.
allow 18-20 hours labour to fit, but most garages would i imagine be accomadating in regards to price if you a pay cash and b dont need it back in a hurry. try asking around the forums for a known vw guru near you, i have a guy up here that would swap them over for £500
OR
sell yours for 1500
and buy this

add a decent exhaust, decat and a set of cams with the change and you'll have your 280 bhp
What exactly is a proper GTI then? Seeing as how the 2.8L 4motion is faster than a GTI of the same era.
Fast and fun really arnt the same thing

It's a DSG, not a traditional auto. So it has flappy paddlesIt's meant to be a very good box.
Lol no, they have uses, going fast and gti things are a no no.
Maybe if you want a fast cruiser thing the 4mo might be an idea but you could go so much faster for the money as has been said
Spend the 4k on something that's fast to start with.
The amount of people we get calling us with a Impreza sport and want to turbocharge it is insane.
Go buy an Sti and save yourself the hassle is our answer every time.
Also, while there are many cars available for the money that are faster than the stock 4motion, I've yet to be directed towards a car that would be faster than a 280bhp 4mo for the money![]()
I had a try with an '09 Z4 3.0i a few months ago with flappy paddles.
