To supercharge or not to supercharge..

Oh? What's the one in the new Z4s (my friend's just bought a 28i)?

A conventional automatic

And what's the difference, excuse my ignorance, except that presumably a DSG can't be driven in Auto mode :p

A conventional automatic has a torque convertor, a DSG gearbox is actually a manual gearbox with two clutches that is operated automatically. It can be operated in an 'auto' mode.

Can do, they have a normal "auto" mode that works fine - This is what is defaulted to unless you decide you want to be in control by moving the stick then using the up/down on that or the paddles

Once on the move they're great fun - the early ones i've driven just have a terrible lag when pulling off from a standstill or near standstill (i.e roundabout situations) that I find quite dangerous tbh. Best trying one yourself i'm sure it's livable when you're used to it / anticipating it happening

I had one of the early DSG Golf GTI's, the momentary lag is easily worked around by partially engaging the clutch before you pull away.

Left foot on brake, increase revs to 1500, let foot off brake and increase throttle when you are clear to go. If feels very natural, almost like you are using a clutch to do that.

As long as you don't rev it hard it works fine, and removes that half a second or so of lag.

I say do it. A V6 burble overlaid with a supercharger whine... in a 4WD package and a car that people don't expect will be quick. Fettle the suspension to address the boatyness. Then modify Haldex controller.

Want :)

centrifugal superchargers dont whine (vortech and rotrex are centrifugal)

i own a 4motion with the 3.2l engine and a rotrex and its epic

mines around 475 hp if your thinking about fi do yourself a favour and ring the phirm

they have just made a kit for the 2.8l using a bigger charger than mine and i think it makes 550 hp :) THAT is proper power

It's too flashy on the outside

If we're still talking about the Mk4 it's about the most plain looking 'performance' variant of a car i've ever seen - bar the badge and wheels, it looks identical to a 1.4.

The 4mo has far more 'look at me' bits on it than the GTI does :/

Modify the Haldex controller how? Out of interest :)

The other thing that might be of note is that the ESP traction control system tries to pretend to be an LSD by braking each wheel when it slips.. that could get very heavy on the brakes despite the 4WD with that much power. Is there any way around this (e.g. would an LSD completely solve this problem?)

no it would make it worse. the esp on th emk4 is HORRID!! i used to turn it off as soon as i started the car but now iv had it completely removed from the map.

abs is on (which i want leaving on) traction control stupid ebd and all of that **** is gone bye bye never to be seen again and the car is much better for it!

the esp is incredibly intrusive and over sensative bordering on dangerous in certain circumstances (ie mid bend when playing with the balance using the throttle then it craps its pants and slams the throttle shut on you which induces lift off oversteer for you oh joy!)

the 4mo is bland aswell the r32 is 1 of the best looking normal cars imho along with mondeo st and a lot of alphas

please excuse my ignorance but... isn't a r32 golf mk5 pretty much the same car? If so then why the hell does it cost nearly twice as much, there can't be that much scene tax...

similer to mk4 i think the mk5 platform was later than that.
ps that adverts wrong aswell it says permanent 4wd but it isnt permanent

Given that it's clearly not worth spending ~£4k of supercharger on a £1.5k car, has anyone come across any electric superchargers? I'm thinking this place although I've emailed them for some further details as it's a little vague on there. However they claim to produce up to 3psi of boost which would be nice, albeit hardly breathtaking (could be talking 40bhp despite their claims of up to 80).

And out of interest, any physics buffs? What happens if you fit two of them in series.. do you get 3+3=6psi, or 3+3=3psi + x2CFM?
