Looking to upgrade soon from my his 5870 1gig and looking at both these cards. Would the 3 gig of the 7970 over the 2gig of the 670gtx give the amd card a longer lifespan with future game titles once the new round of consoles are released in 2013 & programmers give us new titles based on the newer tech. Don't change gpu's every 2yrs. Would games reach the 2gig limit soon if bf3 is already 1 - 1.5 gig already. My monitors res is 2048 x 1152 only use 1 screen and not looking to add more as dont have the desk space.

depending on game etc. they are all within a very small % of each other, the 7970 and 680 will offer the maximum overclock but in real game terms you are talking about an extra 2-3FPS where it matters and the 670 will OC to over stock 680 speeds

Rumour has it the Xbox 720 will only have a graphics card equivalent to an AMD 6670 which will make it 6x faster than the 360.. Microsoft feels it doesn't need to be any more powerful and it helps keep the production/sale prices down, seeing as they want it to be cheaper on launch than when the current Xbox went on sale... so in terms of future proof, you'll be set for many years in terms of going up against consoles

no competition mate, pc's will always be better than a console... always, this is a fact !

I think at resolutions above 1900x1200/1900x1080, neither the 680 or 7970 are future-proof - they are pretty much 'adequate' as single card solutions at the present time. Roll the clock forward a year and you may already be considering more GPU power for whatever is incoming.

Currently faced with the option to upgrade my 480 SLI configuration for 2560x1440 to a GTX670/680, but the biggest stumbling block is that they are a stop-gap solution more than anything else, as they do not smash my 480 SLI by any margin in terms of pure performance.

I would have thought the next range of consoles will have to provide for proper gaming at 1080P, as thats where Tvs are now providing the various res to work at.
Previous consoles were really around the period of 720p becoming standard.

So it's a significant increase in required output.

you will be able to buy a 55'' TV above 1080p in 2 years time, they're already out right now, but way too expensive of course....

it's not just OLED, there's something else as well, plus that Mitsubishi laser RPTV, that is supposed to be the best in the world, it fires a laser beam in a similar way to the old CRT, but right now it isn't working properly, they actually built the tv and sold it years ago but it had too many techical faults and had to be recalled.... there are supposed to be quite a few new technologies around, that right now dont work QUITE RIGHT..just like OLED didn't work 4 years ago.

the days of PLASMA are definitely numbered

when my mates play Xbox on my tv it looks awfall, it's not even close to a pc

720p is poor compared to 1080p, even 1080i looks poor as well

I started off thinking the 7950 would be the best out of them, but at £280 odd, and a GTX580 being available for £240 (Preorder Linky) I'd go for the cheaper one. The 670 is a better bet at the moment, at stock it virtually equals a 7970 and it's only when overclocked when the 7970 pulls a moderate (but in real terms not noticeable) lead. The extra gig of Vram in the 7970 is only really useful when using eyefinity, so unless you have 3 screens the GTX670 at £40 cheaper is the best bet

yes the 670 is the best to go for if you have a 1080p tv, but it doesn't really matter because they're all quite close now, being fanboys like we are, the choice might always be the 670 or the 7970, with the 680 and the 7950 loosing out, the 680 doesn't have enough power advantage over the 670 to justify the extra cost, and you might not be interested in the 7950 period, because it looses out to the 670.... all of this varies from person to person though
