When I first heard about E-readers I thought they where sacrilegious books should stay books, the way they smell and feel etc; the more I come across these things though the more I'm starting to want one so my question is who has one and would they recommend it?

My wife got me a kindle for my birthday last September. I had similar reservations as you i.e, that new book smell and so on. However, I soon put them aside when I didn't have to move/turn over in bed every time I turned a page. Add in the ease with which you pick then book back up as it opens straight to the page you were on. So if you have not read it for a while you are not hunting to remember where you were.

That said, for work purposes I would look at a note pad of reasonable size as the kindle is poor for A4 documents, typically pdfs

got my dada a kindle a couple pf years back. hes the kind of guy that buys the cheap books that no one has ever heard of, mostly horrors, so he can buy them now for dirt cheap.

Do a forum search for "kindle" or "ereader, and you will find such threads already existing. No need to make a new one. :)

They are awesome, until the screen breaks. I thought it was a one off. It's not, DO NOT BUY A KINDLE. Screen broke with no pressure on it.

I have a kindle, so does my boyfriend, my sister, my dad, my boyfriends mum, boyfriends grandma... None of us have had broken screens.

Hoping you were just unlucky.

OP my kindle is great and I wasn't sold on the idea to start with - only thing I don't like is that if you are reading something such as a thriller where you think, 'hang on, hasn't this character been mentioned before?' or something and you want to flick back to a page you read before, obviously it's much more difficult and time consuming.

To be honest I'm not alone on this. But I hear that Amazon are very good at replacing suspected screen brakes. Like I say, it's an awesome product, I loved getting the daily newspaper (the Guardian in my case) delivered nice and early). But the screen issue has blighted at least 8/20 owners I now of.

I got a Sony reader a few years ago. I used it all the time before I got an iphone, now I dont use it at all. I just use ibooks now.

Its not the same obviously and the reader was easier on the eyes, however I just find its more convenient for me to use the iphone because it already goes everywhere with me. I got used to the brighter and smaller screen pretty quickly.

The new small kindle doesn't have the screen issue, though neither does my or my mums kindle keyboard. Thoroughly recommend it though, I haven't read this much in my life.

[1] Buy a Kindle
[2] Screen breaks
[3] != Profit

this 'profit' nonsense was never funny or cool, please move on.

Then a) your kindle was faulty or b) you're talking rubbish and claim it 'just broke'

I know around 40-50 people with kindles and none have had such an issue. Only one person did have a problem, they dropped it and cracked the plastic and a quick email to Amazon and they had a new one in their hand within 2 days for free!

Mine gets carried everywhere with me, it's great!

Can you not search on yours? I swear I have a search function on mine to check and ebook for a word/meaning.

Be quiet I have a kindle, a more expensive 3G version next to me right now and it's screen is cracked. I did NOTHING to crack it, I paid for lots of books I like to read, I did nothing wrong and the device is broke. Please don't tell me to "move on", I am sharing genuine experiences. So Sir maybe you should "Move on".

I've had one for years... great things.

I've had 3 Cybook Gen 3s (all screens broke) a Sony 600 and now a Sony 650 - which in all honesty is going to last me for years.

The Cybooks were very vulnerable to torsion, so the screens broke easily. The Sony 600 and 650 have metal shells which means it's impossible to break the screen except by impact. I don't think the new Sony has the metal shell. I swapped from the 600 to the 650 because of the glare on the 600 screen.

If you don't think you did anything to break the screen it's probably torsion that did it. It is not possible for glass to spontaneously break. I had two of the 3 screen breaks on the Cybooks happen while the book was closed, in an expensive protective case.

I'd strongly suggest that anyone considering buying one gets one in a metal shell.

I've compared my 650 to several Kindles and they're cheap and nasty in comparison. However the 650 has no connectivity other than USB - so the whole Amazon Kindle experience just isn't there.

There is supposedly bendable eink coming out soon, which means that the screen breaking problems might be a thing of the past. However in the mean time don't get one in a plastic shell.

All I know for sure is I bought the cover than Amazon themselves recommend. Which was designed to protect the device. If the screen breaks in those circumstances, am I being careless? I think not.

I broke 3 - although that's over a number of years (I think 2008 I bought my first?).

I don't think you've been careless. However for you to say it broke spontaneously is plain wrong. What's happened is the screen has been put under pressure by torsion, and it's broken at that point, or when it flexes back into the normal position.

Even in a case if you slightly twist the whole thing, or if you put pressure on one corner it can easily break. The only case that will prevent that happening is a rigid one - cardboard/plastic don't do it.

Best though is what I've finally settled on, a high quality leather case (with a stand built in) but most importantly a metal shelled Reader. The leather case on it's own doesn't do it.

The plastic case thing is one of the reasons I don't like the kindle, they feel cheap and flimsy compared to my 505 (which is still going strong and I expect to last another couple of years since I replaced the battery).

Since I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note I've started reading books on it and can now really see the appeal if ereaders. It's so convenient when on a train to be able to shove it back in your pocket. Love it.

Electronic ink is way nicer than LCD.

I'd suggest a second hand 650, or 505 like Werewolf mentioned. The 505 is lacking the pearl screen but it's not a huge improvement really. The 600 is less readable than the 505, but they fixed that in the 650.

I have a second home in Florida, and I'm also a bit of a hoarder, so being able to take hundreds of books with me and hold them in my hand when I go for a break makes me happy.. that and have 400 albums on my phone too... contentment! :)

I've had a Kindle since nearly launch date. My wife has had one since early last year and several of my friends have bought one since seeing mine. None have screen issues.
