Thinking of getting a Mac...

So, I didn't actually get one. I needed something quickly and didn't have the cash at the time, but now I regret it. Is it still worth getting one of the current models now? I can't seem to find out when the new models will be released... :/

13" air IMO. the pro has nothing going for it at the moment
Superior colour reproduction, what most consider to be a superior keyboard, and expandable memory. The Pro theoretically has more going for it. It completely depends on your needs; if one was clearly better than the other, the sales figures would show us that.

The Pro is a tad more powerful than the Air, that is, not enough to make it a deciding factor. We're talking around 10% or so. I'd say that with subsequent releases of Mac OS X, 4GB of memory is going to start pushing it a tad for you. The SSD will diminish that, but it is still worth considering.

The Pro isn't heavy, not at all. That said, if you have to carry around a book or two alongside it, I can imagine why you'd want the Air. The Pro alone is no problem though.

Are you going to be using this as a desktop replacement, or solely as a notebook?

If I had a £1 for every time an Ivy Bridge and complete redesign comment has been posted. The Apple fanbois have been assuming it'll be out within the week for a good five months now!

As proved by the desktop chips Ivy Bridge isn't a step performance wise. If there's a requirement for a 13" quad core then it might be worth waiting on the off chance Apple release one, otherwise buy when you need it.

iMacs out now were launched over a year ago.

Refresh will surely be soon. I expect Ivybridge (meh) but decent GPU upgrade. I also expect cheaper SSD options.

It would just be as a notebook, as I will be keeping the desktop (though may downsize at a later date). We recently got some MBPs in at work and I don't think either the 13" or 15" are as heavy as I had been expecting, although I imagine the Air is still way heavier. So the main thing about the Air is just the higher screen resolution; probably not worth worrying about as the Pro's looks okay to me.

No need for a quad core in the laptop. :)

I guess, taking the above in to account, the thing to do would be just to buy the 13" Pro. Is the Apple SSD (128GB) worth the price or should I just upgrade with an after-market one?

Ta.

I wouldn't want to code on only 4GB of RAM. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to code on a 13" screen, especially the Pro's low-res screen.

If you've got an external monitor, I'd say go with the 13" Pro and upgrade the RAM to 8GB (aftermarket, only about £35).

Well, I've been coding on a 13" for a while now and it's been okay, although that was on one with 1366x768 res. Does 1280x800 make it that difficult? I know I'd prefer it on my 24" desktop screen, but I didn't think it would be particularly bad on the 13" Pro.

I guess it depends on the IDE, but the screen on my 13" Pro is too small for Xcode. 800 pixels isn't enough when the iPhone 4/4S simulator needs 960!

When doing CSS/HTML, if the editor doesn't have code collapsing, it can be a pain to scroll up and down your editor on the 13". As Tunney says, Xcode on 1280x800 is horrible as well. Even on my iMac at 1080p I'm still wanting more screen real estate when messing about in Xcode.

Aftermarket SSD - Although wait for the update (If) you can although it would be slightly foolish if you cannot hold on a while longer!
