Hi all,

It's time for me to get a new car, but I don't know what to get, so I'm hoping you lot can help me decide.

I've currently got a mk5 golf gt tdi (140). It's 55 reg with 83,000 miles on the clock. It's good condition, but fancy a change now. I've had a quick look on parkers, and with a bit of haggling think that i can get a trade in price of about £5,000 for the golf.

So, I've got 5 there, and can put another 2 towards it, allowing me £7,000 to spend on a new car.

What can you guys recommend? I fancy something newish (no older than 4 yrs old), relatively low mileage (<40-50,000 miles), and similar power to the golf (140bhp). It doesn't have to be a diesel, but do lots of miles (50 mile round trip to work), so can't be a gas guzzling petrol. Something nice looking (not billy basic standard models please) would be cool.

Off you go. Suggestions please :D

Many thanks,

Edward

I cannot think of many cars for £7k fitting your criteria that are an upgrade from a Mk5 Golf.

I honestly wouldn't bother at this money, £2k+your Golf just doesn't buy anything better.

Well, I've been wanting to change for a while, and noticed a little rust on the wheel arch today (I think a stone must have flicked up and chipped the paintwork, and I hadn't noticed).

Please, there must be something? It doesn't have to be a hatchback, could be a coupe?

Would you fancy an octavia vrs or golf gti? Reasonable enough on fuel and a bit more power to play with. Not sure what 7k is getting you mind, would be surprised if a decent mk5 gti was within reach but the octavia must be doable.

Sidewards step in a way but would be a different car at least

There are loads of things but not for £7k. £7k is the sort of money that buys a Mk5 Golf in the first place, it's the sort of car people would recommend for £7k. You won't find a sub 4 year old coupe for about £7k thats not worse than a Golf.

If you want to upgrade you'll need more than your car and £2k. Especially when your car is a Mk5 Golf.

This advice is good advice! Listen to Fox, unless you can up your budget there's very little point upgrading from your Golf.

Perfectly illustrates my point. The Leon is a Golf with a horrificlly cheap and nasty interior, marmite styling and an engine thats 30bhp more powerful. A pointless waste of money upgrade for somebody who already has a 2.0 TDI Golf GT.

that interior :(
Fox is right on this one .
You can get plenty of nicer cars for 7k, but they will never meet your age/mileage requirements.

i have to disagree on the interior, it felt very well put together and not at all cheap. it may not be as premium looking as the golf but it cant be faulted on qaulity as far as i could tell.

Disagree, the 12 plate Leon I had as a loan car felt terrible in comparison to my ibiza!

The interior in the Leon is pretty bad from a build and an asthetics point of view. That weird slap of plastic console is pretty horrible. But even if the quality matched his Golf it's still a pointless move because it's really pretty much the same car but with 30bhp more. Not worth it.

i would keep the golf and use the £2000 towards sorting out any issues it has, rusty arches wont cost the earth. also a nice remap will make the car more fun if the engine is solid which it should be

If you must change, why not go for a Mondeo TDCi Titanium-X? Probably has more toys than the Golf, will be equally as reliable and should be enough of a change for you. With a bit of haggling, I'm sure you could get something like this in budget:

[Edit] Misses the point about mileage though. Even so, worth looking around for I think.
