Does iMessage work on iPhone 1?

My girlfriend has an iPhone 1 and I want to get iMessage working on it. I see its an old iOS version. Wondering if I update the iOS will it work?

It requires iOS5 if I remember correctly, which won't work on the original iPhone.

iOS 5 only feature, this is correct.

To be honest, I'd not bother using any form of web-based messaging on the original iPhone while you're out and about, merely because it uses EDGE, which can be poor when it comes to push notifications.

Thanks for the replys, your right it won't update to ios5 on iTunes so no worrys anyways.

Yeah, glad you found out the answer. There's a list of the devices capable of upgrading to iOS5, a quick google should suffice.

3GS and above, basically. Everything that Apple currently sells.

Of course, buying a 3GS has been a terrible decision for...well, more than two years now.

Always works flawlessly for me, and a darn site more reliable than most networks' text messaging services in my experience.

Whenever I have to text someone who doesn't use iMessage and it falls back to the old green boxes, I feel like I'm stepping back to the stone age

I feel it's slowly improving. But at the moment, it can be buggy at times... I just hope they're still working on making it the best possible messaging system.
