Hi Guys

How important are brands when looking at washing machines. I have been looking at a pretty decent spec Indesit machine but a couple of people i have spoke to said it would be worth paying more for a lesser specced machine by the likes of hotpoint or bosch? Whats your views on this?

Cheap.

Spending a little bit more can make a lot of difference to the quality of machine you get. Both Bosch and Samsung do some quite cheap washing machines, and LG are good too. This page on washing machines has lots of useful info.

I've had an A+rated hotpoint one that I paid £150 for in a special offer with a matching dishwasher and neither has missed a beat in over 7 years of use, before that we had a real cheapo from a sale which I gave to my brother and he has used it fault free to this day. Obviously your millage may vary.

This forum will tell you that anything other than a Bosch will be dead within a weak, destroy your clothes, abuse your children and finally run off with your wife. They will then suggest stretching you budget to get a mielle. You can choose to follow this advice slavishly in which case there is a great thread about shaving around somewhere that you will love or you can just go and buy a reasonable price washing machine and be done with it.

The majority of white goods these days are incredibly reliable and if they do go wrong it tends to be straight away while they are still under warranty, all the consumer surveys back this up.

Anything less than 2.5k means you don't love your wife and kids. You'd rather they attend school stinking, covered in faeces. Man up, sell a kidney and get Miele.

Will try for a hotpoint/bosch for £250-260 failing that i think it may be the indesit as i dont have the funds for anymore at the minute but i may in a couple of years.

LG better than a Miele for half the price, with direct drive tech, and plays a tune when the washings done, just soooo cool.

I used to buy cheapo ones off ebay for like £150. They would break within 18 months and would end up buying a new one.

Got a decent Hotpoint one for £400 in 2008 - Its had a couple of things go which have cost me the price of a years service plan on it, £145 - So all in all its worked about the same in cost for a decent machine as it had been for buying cheap.

Cheaper ones dont tend to me as good / efficient either.

Also if you do get decent one, once the warranty runs out, you can get a cheaper service plan if you take it out before anything goes wrong (and most machines will go wrong at some point), making it cheaper to do that wait until you get a fault like I did.

Swings and roundabouts really. I like the fact I now have a decent machine which I can have serviced - Lowers environmental impact of replacing it and it works well :)

Oh and hotpoint and indesit is the same company in case you didnt know.

Unsupported rumour:

Washer repair man i know from work said the cheaper Bosch (sub £400 ish) are really just hotpoint inside, the real Bosch start from £400+ up

Not sure if thats 100% accurate tho, maybe even if its true i guess you still get better support and maybe longer warranty.

Lol at the shaving thread reference; some people buy those products because it is better for their face/skin. I agree on the purchase of a reasonably priced washing machine though. I can't see the point in paying 3x the price for something that will last a fraction extra time.

I'm really happy with the Beko I got. A+ rated, 1600 spin and 8kg load.

Coming from a 1000 spin machine the clothes feel almost dry!
