New card for Graphic Design & Gaming

Hey guys,

I am currently in the market for a new GPU as i am doing a course that uses Autodesk 3ds Max/Mudbox/Maya etc and my current card (HD 6770) isnt really up to scratch for it. I do some gaming too (Skyrim, Fable 3, Sims 3).

I have a budget of £250 for the card and dont really want a Quadro or Fire Pro due to the gaming aspect. I have done some digging around and found an article saying that the HD 6950 is good for graphic design but im not too sure how reliable it is Here, half way down the page.

Any help would be brilliant
 
i actually found this on the Autodesk website:

5 Some features of 3ds Max 2013 and 3ds Max Design 2013 are only enabled when used with graphics hardware that supports Shader Model 3.0 (Pixel Shader and Vertex Shader 3.0). In addition, Quicksilver hardware rendering requires additional GPU resources to work effectively. A minimum of 512 MB of graphics memory should be used. A minimum of 1 GB is recommended for the most complex scenes, shaders, and lighting modes. The integrated NVIDIA® iray® rendering technology operates well solely with CPU processing but processing can be accelerated by NVIDIA GPU CUDA technology.

Does that confirm it?

Based on that, and your budget, i'd go for nvidia

I'm not sure what the "Compute Capability" is, but i'd presume the bigger the number the better :confused:

Maybe this might help. Basically different versions have different limitations:

CUDA (with compute capability 1.x) uses a recursion-free, function-pointer-free subset of the C language, plus some simple extensions. However, a single process must run spread across multiple disjoint memory spaces, unlike other C language runtime environments.
CUDA (with compute capability 2.x) allows a subset of C++ class functionality, for example member functions may not be virtual (this restriction will be removed in some future release)
