How long do monitors last?

When I turn the monitor on, it stays lit for about 2 seconds and then the backlight goes off. That's the only symptom afaik (monitor isn't with me atm).

Yeah it's been a few month just doing nothing.

That's exactly the same as mine. I replaced the caps - no dice. Replaced the transformer - no dice. Stripped the unit bare and 2 or maybe even 3 of the CCFL's are toast.

It could be any of the 3 on yours, I would open it and check the caps first - that's the easiest thing.

Got an old 20" viewsonic vx2025 here, must be going on for 6 years old now. Still looks as good as the day i unboxed it.

My Samsung 245B is still going strong - very strong with not one dead pixel - after 10 hours a day use since I bought it in 2007. It is a superb piece of kit and I will continue to use it in portarit mode when i get my new Dell u3011.

We have hundreds of LCD's at work and they are extremely reliable. This bloke at the party who said don't buy is a clown - in terms of IT at any rate.

Ok brilliant thanks. It'll be July until I can open it up though.

In my experience there aren't too many people that work in 'IT' ...which is a pretty darn varied field anyway, that really have a clue about electronics. They will believe all sorts of he said, she said bull doodoo and if Bob's, mother's, brother's pen friend from Pluto had something made by X company and it had a problem ...then obviously it must mean that for all eternity all products made by X company are rubbish and should be avoided like Primary Syphilis. Despite the fact that the very same person will swear by a product made by Y company ...which uses 90% of the same parts anyway and is made in the factory next door. Personally I would pay a little more attention to the after sales support the company gives if you do get a problem, that's where companies like Dell really earn their stars.

I've only seen an LCD fail once, and that was because of a water leak ...and that would have killed any LCD, whoever made it or however old. I've seen many old LCD's get chucked by companies just because they are small and old and have simply been replaced by something newer and nicer to look at, they still worked fine.

After all, when you upgrade your office machines every 3 or 4 years on lease, you don't keep your old monitors, and if you buy the machines the same is usually true again.

I bought our first 15" Sony TFT LCD monitor back in early 2004 and just sold it couple of weeks ago. Even after almost 8 years of heavy usage, the monitor was solid as bull.

Another monitor was 20" Philips LCD monitor bought back in 2006. Working perfectly aswell although currently on ebay for sale :p

My Samsung 226BW is still going strong, used daily for the last 4 years and I know these tend to go wrong due to cheap capacitors used on the power PCB.
