Hi All,

Just after some recommendations for a single drive NAS which needs to be easy plug and play as im helping out a friend who requires one. Can anyone suggest any brands that are reliable and easy to use? I have limited exerpience with NAS as ive only ever had a Netgear Stora but even that would probally be overkill for what my friend needs one for: Music storage to stream to a Sonos Play 5. Something as close as to an external hard drive that can plug into a router would be best.

Any suggestions/experiences would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

I'd advise against plugging an external hard drive into a router. None of the routers seem to work that well as a file server. The Netgear Stora sounds ideal for your friend's needs to me.

I meant something along the lines of a Western Digital My Book Live which has an Ethernet port so it's just a glorified external HDD. I'm aware of how poop using USB share ports can be on routers as ive got one on mine, it is useless.

doesn't the sonos require the nas to support CIFS... not sure if a 'basic' nas will cover that but I know a synology would.

Perhaps a Synology DS112j with a single hard disk fitted? Can by them preloaded with hard disks too. SLightly deaer option but they are great units. My REVIEW of the DS112j

Also got some other reviews on there. Is there any budget? And what is the capcity needed?

I think that Synology unit might fit the bill perfectly, ive found it minus the HDD for around £120, just going to stick a 500gb HDD in it which will be about £60 for a decent compatible drive.

Had a read of your review and the iphone app features are definitely a bonus.

I've shown it to my friend and they like the look of it and it seems to offer everything they need.

Thanks again for the help and suggestions.
