I've been looking to change my car for a while now and I've recently seen a mk5 Golf GTI advertised not too far from me which has tickled my fancy. It's an 54 plate (2005), 76K miles, FSH, was serviced and MOT'd in Feb and is on offer for £6,750. What sort of things should I be looking out for to go wrong in future and what would you expect to have been replaced by this mileage? My annual mileage is less than 5k but I'd rather be aware if the turbo, clutch etc would be expected to go around this mileage (if it hasn't been replaced already).

Any views on the price or other advice more than welcome :)

Price seems a little expensive for a very early model. Is it a manual or a DSG?

Make sure the cambelt has been changed - should have been changed at 4 years. If not, budget around £300 or so to get it changed ASAP! (the service book will say otherwise, but VW changed the intervals!).

What options does it have? Options you should be looking for are Xenons, multi function steering wheel, leather seats and the winter pack (heated seats)

Sounds like a good price, depending on the condition and service history etc. There isn't much on them apart that is a particular problem, just check it has been serviced regularly, cam belt has been done etc.

That's a good price? Dealer I take it? Seems a lot but I know there's a bit of a scene tax on the GTI compared with the A3 (which I'm more familiar with). I'd look at a A3 2.0T Quattro too, because you'll get a nice one for that money.

No it's a private sale. I had been looking at GTI's before but as you said the scene tax put me off, however they seem to have come down a bit though since the mk6 was released.

Consider something like this.

Not that I'm biased, but you're getting more car for your money IMO (a lot less money too :D), but it's not significantly older (older model though if that bothers you), although the Mk5 isn't current either.

Nope, passenger only. Like I say, I'm biased.

However presuming that you have driven one.. is it really worth a £3k premium over the Mk4 V6? You could buy a decent spare Mk4 for that!

Remember its a whole generation newer so its always going to carry a premium, it really is a far better all round car too. Up to the individual to put a value on the premium over the mk4 but put it this way, it is at least as good a car if not a better all rounder (bar the noise) than the first r32 and those ain't sitting at v6 4mo money

I have a mk4 4Mo that I love.

But I'd buy the mk5 GTI :)

Maybe I'll have to try one out properly then!
