Puppies !!

You can get some collars that might do the trick. If you order immediately after a sleepless night you might be tempted by the electric shock collars. If you are feeling a bit more reasonable, spray collars such as these are supposed to be effective. They are expensive but I'm pretty sure that you can send it back if it doesn't work within 30 days.

Oh ! I've heard about those spray collars before, they actually work?

Oh I'd never use an electric collar or a spray one! I did try a canister of pressured air spray before, but that was for a different problem...hang on are we talking about the dogs here? lol :D

Can I just say thank you to all replies, the serious ones and the funny! It is much appreciated, especially as the Cocker Spaniel forum I posted on has had zilch replies lol.

Bit of a silly question but what action actually gets them to stop? You said you let them out but that doesn't help, does feeding them stop it? Or do they just quiet down after you or the missus have been up for a bit? A friend of mine had the same problem with his doberman but it grew out of it eventually.

+1

dogs are pack animals. OP: you and mrs are the pack leaders so they miss you. dogs like everyone being together so they get upset when you arent.

they will grow out of it. its hard to ignore them though. the more you pander to them the more they will do it. once a dog sees correlation between an action and an outcome (howl and get let out) they will keep doing it.

also remember that they dont have strong bladders. they might cry because they need the loo but then when they see you they forget about it as they are excited to see you.

dogs and kids are very easy to get into bad habits with.

Hey ! You saying my missus is an old jumper !? :p

Hmm, its an interesting idea though, now....what can I put in there to remind them of the missus. An empty wine bottle perhaps. :)

Maybe not old socks, dont want the RSPCA round on animal cruelty charges, but yeah some old jumper or something might be worth a shot

dogs love socks and shoes. i guess its because they have the most odour. if you give them socks you get give them a sock fetish though... our dog is always after shoes and socks!

I can't recall whether this has been asked / replied but does the barking start at a particular time? There could be something that sets them off - boiler coming on, fridge making a noise, sunrise etc etc. Your best bet might simply be to go back to how you would have dealt with younger puppies.
